One of my 8 month old buff orpingtons puffs her feathers whenever i come around. She's also losing some feathers on her belly. Otherwise she's fine. Still laying almost every day. Any idea what's going on?

Maybe broody

just a thought. Have had hens to pluck feather from the breast I think to keep the eggs warm.

I am not sure about the puffing out her feathers when you come around but if she is losing some feathers on her belly she might be going broody and that might explain both behaviours, have you noticed another symptoms?

No. I guess she could be broody. She's kind of a strange chicken. She had a cold when she was 3 months old and she's undersized. She lays eggs regularly but they're kind of off white instead of brown and they have white specks on them. I think she puffs out her feathers to make herself look bigger for some reason. Maybe it's because she's the smallest. Oh, actually i don't think she's broody. She doesn't stay in the nest box.

Yes she will eventually sit 24/7, and if you don't want chicks make sure she's not sitting on any eggs. Check for eggs under her daily.

She will stop laying but if you have any other hens in there, they might lay where your broody is.
