    INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hope you won't mind if I join in. I'm a fellow Hoosier. My family farms producing grains, hay and beef with the poultry as a hobby. I've always been drawn to birds in the American class as well as Orpingtons. We have around 150 currently, mostly Wyandottes, New Hampshires and Dominiques. The...

more nervous about chicks than children

Even in heated garage l would not try taking heat away for at least another 2 weeks. Since I don't usually brood older birds indoors, I provide heat for 6 wks at a minimum. Remember the heat starts at 90 and can be lowered 5 degrees each week. With lamps I switch to lower wattage incandescent...

more nervous about chicks than children

Your chicks are two weeks old so your off to a good start. :clap I too stressed over heat lamps but thankfully never had a mishap with one. I quickly discarded the huge 250 watt bulb when preparing my first indoor brooder. Way too much heat for my needs. Just be sure to check the temp or listen...

The 10th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!!

Final count, 17 chicks hatched. Found a very welcome but unexpected surprise this morning, a single Partridge Wyandotte! :celebrateThe only one out of nearly 100 chicks this spring. Had begun to think the partridge cockerel was a dud.

The 10th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!!

18 of 29 eggs locked down a couple days ago. Had really hoped for better fertility but I can only do so much in that department. I've supplemented light, added vitamins and trimmed vents.:he Maybe broody hens will yield me some Wyandottes later or I'll fire up the incubator and try this fall...

    March Hatch-A-Long

Haven't taken the time to check in lately. Busy, busy, busy! Here's a pic of this weeks hatch as I cleared shells. It went very well. Of the initial 20 eggs set, 18 made it to the hatcher. 17 of those hatched like clockwork, 11 bantam New Hampshires & 6 lf Dominiques. Humidity issues plagued...

    March Hatch-A-Long

Jury duty forced me to lock this week's hatch down a day early. As a result my water reservoirs were drying up(57%) a day too soon. Long ago I learned the reality of shrink wrapped chicks so this is how I add water as needed. Now back at 62%. We're still having subzero temps so the blanket wrap...

Hello everyone! I'd like to join in. I have small hatches of LF Dominiques & Bantam New Hampshires scheduled each week. Struggling with Wyandotte fertility so looking forward to candling the latest batch next week. I run 2 Hova-bator 1588s. One as incubator and the other as a hatcher. I've read...
