    "Mean" hen?

Really? She doesn't look like the roosters I've seen, though - not an especially ornate tail or anything like that. Are there roosters who don't crow? LOL

    "Mean" hen?

We could try that, sure. My son, who is usually outside near them more than I am, says that she's always chased the other ones (even away from the food - just wandering in the yard) but this last month, she's been jumping on the backs of the chickens and pulling out their feathers. She's...

    "Mean" hen?

If it's a rooster, it's the quietest rooster ever. Never heard a crow out of her at all. My kids say they don't often see her in the nest boxes, though. However, if it's pertinent, she came from a flock with a rooster or two.

One of my hens is missing almost all feathers on her back

So...do you suggest Hot Pick and Rooster Booster? (And maybe it doesn't matter, but I don't have a rooster - we're already skirting the law by having chickens, though lots of people do have 'em around here. It's not the sort of thing that's enforced unless there are complaints.)

One of my hens is missing almost all feathers on her back

When I got my (10) hens from a friend last summer, all of them were missing back feathers and tail feathers. She said they'd been a bit overcrowded in her coop, and that by January, they'd look a lot better. That was true for all of them except one - she's missing most of the feathers on her...

    "Mean" hen?

Please forgive any errors in terminology or description - I'm a novice! Last July, my friend gave me 10 laying hens; we still have 8 of them (one had a prolapsed...something and died quickly, and about a month ago, the other climbed onto the metal trash can where we store their food, flipped...

New problem w/ RIR chick - "air bubble" on neck, near wing?

They're on "clean shavings" - that's what the folks at the feed store called them. So, it's possible that it's crop-related, but I don't feel anything "hard" that I could sort of massage down, you know? However, I noticed tonight, when I gave them water, that they just drank and drank and...

New problem w/ RIR chick - "air bubble" on neck, near wing?

I don't think it's the crop - it's on the side, right "above" the wing, but it's also very soft - like there's just air in it. Baby chick (3.5 weeks now) doesn't seem bothered by it. I did a bit of searching and saw that it often goes away, so I'm hoping it does the same for this little...

New problem w/ RIR chick - "air bubble" on neck, near wing?

It doesn't seem irritated or painful...hoping it goes away on its own!

New problem w/ RIR chick - "air bubble" on neck, near wing?

So, one of the two chicks that just went through four days of being close to dying, has what feels like an air bubble on its neck, close to the wing. It was noticeable before, but I was more concerned about their more serious condition, and it wasn't as big earlier. I noticed tonight, though...

2 baby RIR chicks ...recovered! :)

Oh! I'm so sorry! Sadness x2 - what a rough day for you. I hope the rest of your babies do well. Final update on my chicks: I think they've fully recovered! They're walking fine, scratching for food, peeping like they used to... I can't imagine what happened, but I'm glad they're doing...

2 baby RIR chicks ...recovered! :)

Tuesday morning - They're both doing great, walking around and chirping like they used to do. Phew! Minniechickmama - I'm hoping your little chickie pulls through! Sending lots of PVs your way...

2 baby RIR chicks ...recovered! :)

I thought I'd give an update for Monday evening - This afternoon, I walked in and found the weaker one laying on its side on the plate with scrambled egg; legs were pulled up and feet were curled. Eyes were closed. I really thought it was dead, or close to it. I took it out, gave it water...

2 baby RIR chicks ...recovered! :)

Update, Monday morning, almost 9 am - Both chicks are still alive, and in fact, this morning when I checked on them, both were awake. One was chirping and seems much stronger; the other one is still rather weak, but I look at it as a positive that both were awake (since the last three days...

2 baby RIR chicks ...recovered! :)

After reading one of the recent threads on here (Hen can't use left leg), I'm wondering if it could be Marek's. I'll call the feed store in the morning to see if these babies were vaccinated. This image looks a bit like the chick who's worse off, and although the other one is more capable of...
