Moving chicks outside in SW WA?

The top is about 80% open. The covered spot is a cardboard box and the rest is a huge old window screen I covered with hardware cloth. They rotate between two spots, one under the box covered area where they sleep together another under the hardware cloth area where there is a small stick as a...

Moving chicks outside in SW WA?

When can I move my chicks outside? I have been reading so much and now I am all confused. The my pet chicken site said 4-5 weeks, another site said 8-10 weeks, and I get even more variety of answers when reading back posts here on BYC. :lol So what do you think? I'm in SW WA. Lows in the...

PNW chicken owners and other rainy areas. Run muddy, some questions.

Quote: Dry ground? I don't even know what that is. I guess we will be waiting until July or August to do any gravel.

PNW chicken owners and other rainy areas. Run muddy, some questions.

Thanks everyone! We are planning to get a bigger tarp this weekend so the small area that is not covered will quick dripping/pouring in. I will definately let them out tomorrow! I felt so bad keeping them in today but it was just pouring and I was not sure if it was good for them to get that wet.

PNW chicken owners and other rainy areas. Run muddy, some questions.

Quote: How do you clean out the run if its covered in gravel? We usually just rake it out when needed but raking would just rake the gravel.

PNW chicken owners and other rainy areas. Run muddy, some questions.

Okay really was not sure where to put this, has some health questions as well as copp/run issues. I live in the PNW, specifically SW WA, and well its RAINY! Rainy season has started and the outdoor run is just soaked. When it just rains straight down there is a large area that is dry...

    No Eggs???

I live in Vancouver, WA. The chickens have been getting up (going into the run) around 5ish and going to bed around 7. They are eating layer pellets, kitchen scraps, they have some oyster shell but only one or two eat it, they get to free range at least an hour a day. Still patiently waiting...

    No Eggs???

The younger batch I am pretty sure on age. I bought them from the local 4H poultry guy. He breeds them. A friend also bought some from him and hers are laying but I need to ask her if she bought the younger batch or older batch. The other 4 I am more unsure on age (the woman was not sure)...

    No Eggs???

We have 8 chickens. I was told 4 of them were 3.5 months (for sure) when we got them and the others were about a month older so 4.5 months (not for sure). It has been 3 months and no one is laying yet. Several of them have very full and red comb and wattles (the younger bunch). Two have...

How to keep them out of the nest box

Quote: This might be something to try. Would hardware cloth work the same as I don't have any chicken wire?

How to keep them out of the nest box

Quote: Could they still get in it then? The boxes are about 14 inches high (I think?) so that would not leave a lot of room.

How to keep them out of the nest box

We have 8 chickens (2 RIR, 2 EE, 1 unsure, 1 polish, 1 gold sexlink, 1 black Ostralorp all between 4.5 to 6 months), none laying yet but soon I hope. I opened up the nest boxes a few weeks ago just in case and some of the chickens go sit in there during the day and kick all the straw out into...
