Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hey all! Would anyone be interested in 7 week old Coturnix quail? I have 6 females and 4 males. They just started laying this week and I'm getting about two a day. I was just offered a job on Mackinac Island for the summer and cannot take them with me. Super cheap! I'm in the Macomb area, so I...

Processing quail- Best type of scissors?

I've never processed before so I'm nervous it will be difficult to make one clean cut. Are their neck bones pretty easy to cut through?

Sorry to go off topic, but USAmma, that link was hilarious! Makes my quail seem like angels.

Processing quail- Best type of scissors?

Does anyone recommend a good pair of kitchen shears/scissors that they use when they process their quail? I have a cheap dollar store pair of kitchen scissors now, but I want to make sure I get a good quality pair that will do it's job without causing suffering.

    Quail Rooster Insessent crowing

I'm having the same issue. I'm probably going to cull my roos at 6 weeks instead of waiting for 8 weeks. I tried to partition their coop to separate them, but the males found a way to somehow get to the other side. Covering up their cage at night doesn't help much either.

    Processing males early

They're pretty excited about the eggs. It's nice to have pets with a little "return" for all the care and hard work we put into them ;)

    Processing males early

Thank you for the help! I will try to move them to a darker area. Will they be able to smell the females? Could I just partition the hutch they're in now or do I need to move them further away?

    Processing males early

My males are just under 5 weeks old right now, inside my basement, and crowing even through the night. My roommates are starting to get a little frustrated with my new endeavor. I know they are fully grown to be processed by 8 weeks, but how large of a weight difference is there between 5 and 8...

    horizontal water nipples

My birds don't even understand that's where the water comes from. How do you teach them to peck at it?

    Trays for quail pens

Hey all! My quail pen has dimensions that aren't quite common for oil drip pans, which I know a lot of you use to catch quail poo. My pen is about 58 inches by 20 inches. So a little less than 5' by 2'. Any suggestions as to what to use? Right now I just have the underside lined with paper towel...

Cortunix Chick isnt growing pls help if you have any ideas

I just hatched my first batch of quail on March 16th and I also had a chick that walked on the front of his "ankle" joint (I guess technically the analogous body part would be the knee) and after two weeks, he corrected himself. He is still smaller than the rest of the batch, but I'm wondering...

    Light on chicks

I'm wondering the same thing. I have a white light on them and it's been on for 48 hours so far. I also put a little bit of apple cider vinegar "with mother" in their water and they seem to like it. Be sure to grind up the crumbles very small so the chicks can eat it. Congrats on the hatch...

Going into Lockdown a day early...

Hey everyone! I'm new here and this is my first hatch. I currently have 30 quail eggs in a homemade incubator and they are set to go on lockdown tomorrow. I won't be around for most of the day, so I was wondering if I could start their lockdown a day early to make sure I can get the humidity up...
