    Broody and Babies

I would just let the mother do the raising. We never separate our hens when they have chicks and the other adult chickens never dare to bother the momma hens. The mom hen will eventually get out of her broody phase and she will rejoin the flock (at least this has been my experience). We let...

    Will hens adopt?

I have never done this myself but I have read before that if a broody hen has recently hatched chicks you can place the new chicks under her while she is getting ready to go to sleep. Just cover the new chick in your hand as much as possible and just place it under her. It's worth a try.

When can chicks have outside time?

I have read that the general rule of thumb is that when they are fully feathered they can go outside, weather permitting. In my personal experience, however, when our hens hatch chicks we just give all the authority to the hen. She tends to take them out after a week or week and a half.

Do I need to trim their nails?

No, you shouldn't have to. Like annaraven said, once they start scratching the ground their nails will become more dull.

For those who have chickens & cont. to buy chicks.

We had a flock of our rooster, 2 hens, and 7 of their chicks. We got a new hen off of BYC actually. We are lucky that our chicken coop is divided into 2 sections so it is basically like having 2 coops. We would let the regular flock free range as usual and we kept her in the coop for about a...

How big of a space do chickens need for their beaks in a waterer?

I would say that the space would need to be bigger--more like 1.5-2 inches. As far as the bedding getting in the waterer we got one of those livestock feed bowls, they are black rubber material, and we turned it over and put the waterer on that.

    racoons

He won't protect a flock successfully from raccoons. The best you can do is locking your flock inside a coop or shelter at night.

    Need help pricing chickens!

I am in the Houston, TX area and hens around here go for $15-$20. You could give a discount if someone buys multiple but there is such a large demand for laying hens that I think you won't have a problem selling all of them.

    Pet Peeves

For me it is when people keep drinking a drink that is empty, so it makes the annoying straw slurping sound. It's like your drink is empty people, get a new one if you want it so bad!!!!!!

How long will a broody hen sit on unfertilized eggs?

Well, the incubation is 21 days so maybe after that she will realize that they aren't going to hatch and she will snap out of her broodiness. If you do want to hatch eggs you could always buy fertile eggs from someone and put them under her. You could check craigslist and see if there are any...

    What kind of chick starter

I just feed the commercial Purina chick start & grow. I feed my adult chickens snacks like scrambled eggs and yogurt. I would feed it to the chicks, and have tried, but they never seem interested in it.

Neighbor's dog killed chickens, willing to compensate

The same thing happened to us. Two of the neigbor's dogs got out and massacred our flock. We came home to find two alive and one injured, all of the others were dead. We went over there and they said that our chickens had been in their yard-this was definitely not true: our chickens always...
