St. Mary's County Maryland and Surrounding Area?

Hi! I'm down the road in Dentsville. My 4 girls (first ever) will be 2 years old this spring. It's been a very cool learning experience. They are happy and healthy and lay wonderful eggs. They were not thrilled with the snow we got a couple weeks ago - chickens really don't like snow...

Heated rabbit water bowl for 4 chickens

Hi Mary, I did order the heated bowl - amazon prime will magically deliver it tomorrow (Sunday!). I'll let everyone know how it works for our 4 girls - not fancy chickens - no top knots. They have adapted to every waterer I've thrown at them, from standard ones to the brite tap I have used...

Heated rabbit water bowl for 4 chickens

Hi All, Newbie here. I've just learned the joy of lugging water out to the coop in the morning in subfreezing weather! Only to have it freeze up within an hour. So, I did look at heated dog water bowls - way to big for my little chicken tractor and 4 girls. The guy at tractor supply...

I Ordered the Britetap Chicken Water'er!

I just ordered one. I'm so tired of the messy waterer I have now. I took their advice and ordered some silicone tubing and a non weldable valve. I was impressed that Mark from customer service answered my email within one day! Beth

    New chicken owner behavior questions

Hi All, Brand new chicken owner here. So, a couple of questions for you experienced folks. Remember I'm a complete newbie! I didn't think the girls would really notice if I was outside or not. Wrong. They call loudly when I come out of the basement with the dog. They aren't afraid of the dog...

Moving chickens in a pen to the garden

Thank you. I've got a pen to put them in once they're in the garden. They will be supervised and go back to the coop after a couple hours. Think I'll get some chicken wire and hoops. Beth

Moving chickens in a pen to the garden

Thank you! I like the tunnel idea. The girls are 20 weeks old. I want to let them in to the garden to clean up when crops are done. I planted alfalfa where I want to plant asparagus figuring the girls would be able to turn it over and loosen the soil. Do you think floating row cover as a tunnel...

Moving chickens in a pen to the garden

Hi All, Newbie here! I'd like my 5 girls to have a chance to be in the garden for a few hours. Is there an easy way to move them from one place to another? Free ranging is not an option here. I have a pen that I'd like to use. How do I get them to walk in the pen to the garden? Thanks, Beth

St. Mary's County Maryland and Surrounding Area?

Hi from Dentsville, MD! That's Charles county, not far from La Plata or Mechanicsville. New chicken owner here. I was wondering if anyone here in southern Maryland trades off taking care of chickens for owners going on vacation? I know I can pay a pet sitter but would really like to have...

    Hand built Amish coop

Thank you! It's a little bigger and heavier than we expected but really well built. We had them put a ridge vent in for extra ventilation. Here's the girls in front of the veggie garden today.

Hi All, We got our first egg a couple of days ago! We have 5 Rhode Island Red/white leghorn mix. At least that's what the guy raising them told me! 19 weeks old. Another 2 eggs today. I have so much to learn. So glad you are all so knowledgable! Beth Southern Maryland
