    Roosters combs turned black

Nope, one is an Australorp and the other is a Wyandotte / Cochin cross.

    Roosters combs turned black

Oddly enough they turned back to the normal colour with no obvious ill effect. I'm guessing there may have been some heart or liver stress... maybe they had a little kerfuffle or something.

    Roosters combs turned black

I have a flock of 22 hens and 3 roosters. This morning when I went to feed them two of the roosters were exhibiting very black combs. One of the roosters in an australorp and the other is a wyandotte-cochin cross. As far as I can tell they were both fine yesterday. The wyandotte-cochin also...

Sexing Blue x Black Australorps - can you tell by colour?

I have six Australorp chicks from a blue roo and a black hen. 3 are blue and 3 are black. Does colour indicate sex with this mix?

    Dancing Rooster

Is it normal for roosters to dance when they try and mount their hens? I have one that does a little dance every time and I'm getting quite a kick out of it!

Mama is looking for a hiding place

Sourland, you're so right! She laid an egg today for the first time since she went broody. Thankfully it was in the coop, though - we're keeping the car windows CLOSED from now on. My husband almost had a heart attack yesterday when he got in the car and turned around to see two beady eyes...

Mama is looking for a hiding place

My hen hatched 6 eggs about a month ago. She's been a great mother, very protective, but over the past 2 days she's started what seems to be a process of making the chicks fend for themselves. It began with her moving farther and farther from them, ignoring them when they squawked for her...

    Helping rescued chickens adjust

Matt, I think you're right, they look very much like White Rocks. Thanks!

    Helping rescued chickens adjust

i made sure to dust their new coop well before I put them in so hopefully that will at least take care of any external parasites (although thankfully I haven't seen any and I suspect they'd be easy to spot with the number of missing feathers!) I don't think they're Orps - they all have...

    Helping rescued chickens adjust

Thanks for those suggestions, I definitely appreciate the help. They seem to be adjusting very well - they are very tame with me despite everything they've been through and they've more or less stopped picking on each other, as well. I am led to believe they're about 1 year old, although I don't...

    Helping rescued chickens adjust

I rescued 5 hens from a very bad situation a couple of days ago. There were at least 40 of them crammed into a coop big enough for 5 or 6 max. Needless to say they were all pecked and beaten. The ones I took have almost no feathers left. When we got them home they were thirsty and starving -...

    babies outing (pics)

Since about day 3 my Australorp has been taking her babies exploring. I was very wary at first of letting them out of the coop but she is über-protective and after a week of free ranging they've grown incredibly fast, and they are super healthy and happy.

    Humidity & Natural Hatching

I see everyone referring to humidity in relation to hatching and incubators. I'm doing my first natural hatch with a broody (today is hatch day).So I'm wondering - how is humidity controlled during a natural hatch? I'm not too concerned - we live in a naturally humid environment, but I'm...
