    North to Alaska!

Whoops, was about a week late with that reply, wasn't I? My bad, guess that didn't add much to the conversation.... well, while we're talking, here's some random recent observations I've had: 1) I was having trouble with a fox for a while, but he was coming by while I was at work, and I didn't...

    North to Alaska!

Cackle hatchery and Murray McMurray both do a perfectly serviceable job shipping to Alaska. Always nice to find local folks you can pick birds up from, but ordering online really isn't a problem, so don't let yourself get held back to whatever is locally available!

    Thermometer sabotage! Cooking/freezing eggs! Ahhhh!

So I have one of those hovabator incubators, and a little digital thermometer/hygrometer from incubator warehouse. This one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Digital-EGG-incubator-THERMOMETER-Hygrometer-Remote-/270728590583 Anyway, my girlfriend surprises me with some Icelandic chicken eggs on Tuesday...

    Essential Oils

We douse nest boxes and walls with a neem oil solution when we clean the coup, and near as I can tell it isn't harmful to anything other than bugs and mildew. I've also rolled the dice and used a tea-tree oil solution for a baby chick covered in fleas. Yeah, the oil is dangerous for chicks...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

We got 12 out of our 16 hens! It's a good day!

    Roo to hen ratio

We have about 16 birds and two roosters. They sort of formed their own flocks but slept together in the barn. The younger of the two roosters started become aggressive to our senior rooster and they wound up fighting. The younger rooster didn't make it and now we have one rooster for the 16...

good short and cute chicken names please!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Out on our farm we've had some bad luck naming our favorite animals. As soon as they get a cute name the seem to die! But here's the list of our chickies and other animals for this year: Rocky (the llama) Meaty (the king rooster) Booboo (the hens favorite best friend) Mama (our hatcher) Grandma...

    Foxes AND Coyotes!

A fox just took the life of our sweetheart of a turkey. So devastated! Now we too are concerned about our other chickens. Luckily for us, we have a useless golden retreiver to stand by and watch :/

Help, do I assist or not yet??

Every time I've ever interfered with a struggling egg, it's ended up in heartbreak. I'm sure there's a right way to do it, but I just end up with dead chicks... and even though they probably were on their way out already, I feel like my meddling was responsible. In my experience, its easier to...

    Baby Chick Pictures!!!!! POST!

This probably is the wrong thread for this, but if nobody else is answering you anywhere... I'll give it a shot :( I've had that kind of foot problem go both ways. The last batch I hatched out, there was one little guy ("Oreo") that was limping around on soft looking little feet, and he didn't...

    people with house chickens

I've never been able to figure out chicken diapers (though admittedly, I haven't tried looking very hard for a good design). The last time I tried turned out like this: .... as you can see, not that elegant, or effective! We ended up not worrying about it, because we've got hardwood floors...

    In rememberance of sweet Jelly!

That's Jelly, my sweet clumsy loving little awkward girl. She had questionable parentage, but I'm sure she was a broadbreasted bronze (folks we got her from tried to tell us she was a blue slate, which is just obviously so very wrong, and she weighed nearly 20 lbs!). We adopted her last October...

    Hello from Alaska

Greetings from Kodiak, Alaska! I've had a flock of chickens (and the occasional duck) for as long as I can remember. We do a little bit of gardening here, a couple dozen eggs sold there to family and friends... just a chill little couple acres of small time stuff, no fences for our birds :)...
