We had a RI red that started laying thin or no shell eggs her second year, fed Purina Oyster shell mixture and she was a good eater. However, she started eating her eggs, Our Buffs all lay good hard shelled eggs and seem much happier with her gone. She had also started bullying all the other hens.
We just moved our 4 chicks out to their coop for good. Started putting them out during the day and bringing them into the garage at night, but they are outside permanently now. They are 4 weeks old and almost all feathered out. We live in central Alabama so it is pretty warm even at night.
Still having problems with our RIR hen laying eggs that are soft on one end. She was our best layer and don't know what the problem is. She is fed Purina laying mash that has oyster shells in it and also has free choice shells. Anyone ever had this problem?
Our Henny-Penny was our best egg layer but this spring she has been laying soft shell eggs for about a month and we can't figure out why. She has oyster shells available and also we feed layer feed with oyster shells in the feed. Anybody got any ideas or has had this problem?
I think it depends on the weather, we moved ours gradually first out to the garage then let them into coop when they outgrew their garage box and weather got warm.
This is the best chicken coop ever! Enjoyed your pics and plans. We live in Alabama so don't have real cold winters; however our summers are very hot! Loved some of your cooling ideas for warm weather. We also are fairly new at this and enjoy seeing new ideas.
Bought little red barn from TSC seemed a little small for our 7 hens so put up a 8 x 10 shed and added windows and one door then hooked everything together and added the run. They now have an indoor and outdoor coop plus a movable run to stretch their legs.
We started out with this little TSC coop soon bought a shed and attached everything so our hens have an inside and outside coop; will try to post picture. Good luck with your chicks!
