Update:
The more sickly chicken was kept in the basement, in a box in dim light. We gave her water and rolled oats but she wasn't pooping. Earlier this morning I gave her some more oats, she ate some so I left her alone. A couple hours have gone by now and I just went down to check her and she's...
So I just tried to put the healthier hen back into the coop with the others; they immediately started pecking at her butt. So, she's now back in the basement in a box. I've given them fresh water with a dash of cider vinegar and yogurt with rolled oats. I also applied a heavy coating of...
Would vent gleet cause her to not be able to pass the egg? I'm starting to think it's that. Last night they both had another Epsom salts bath and I gave them organic plain yogurt with rolled oats.
The one chicken looks good, I'm probably going to put her back into the coop today, her poops are...
Two of our 5 Red Sex Links were found this week sitting in the snow alone, bleeding from their vent. I think the bleeding was mostly from the other girls pecking & pulling out their feathers around their vents.
We've had chickens a few years ago who were egg bound, we were able to save one, but...
Okay! Thank you everyone for your quick & informative responses. I feel much better now. I'll be sure to have my DH read your posts. He was getting ready to make dinner out of the free-loaders.
We're still learning the chicken business as we go and as we encounter different breeds.
I'll keep...
Hey everyone, I need some help with my 2 Colombian Wyandotte's. We got them as fertilized eggs from a local farmer in the spring and our wonderful Silkie hatched them at the end of May 2012. We kept the 2 hens that hatched, gave the 2 roosters to a friend with a hobby farm.
The chickens are...
3 weeks ago we brought home to our 2 Red-Sex Link hens, a Silkie and 3 4-week old Ameraucanas...The 2 old hens are still torturing the poor Silkie. We had the Silkie and the 3 chicks in a seperate coop for 2 weeks, then the 3 babies decided they would go into the big coop with the older hens -...
We use pine shavings. We just picked up 3 4-week old Ameraucana chicks last weekend and they were on either hay or straw (it was a farm). We always use the pine shavings because we read somewhere when we were getting started that using hay/straw can cause serious mite problems. I don't know...
I am in Fonthill, ON, just outside of Niagara Falls. Legally we are not supposed to have chickens, Niagara Falls residents however can (we're 20 mins away). We got out chickens anyway, didn't contact anyone from the town. We only have hens which started out to be just for their eggs, but now...
Had this happen to us also, turned out to be calcium problem - we weren't giving them a supplement. One day when I had a shell less egg I discovered the soft shell half hanging out of the hen, I had to gently pull it out.
