Blue heated dog water bowls from tractor supply

Thanks for the post. I just set up some heated dog bowls for my bantams & polish. One of the Polish hens has a wet head. It must have been from dipping it in the bowl. I'm concerned about the Polish roosters wattles. I had already put a vaseline type salve on today. I don't want his wattles...

We love our Polish & Polish mixes. Chickenboy and his rooster Blackjack play tag. Blackjack is a white crested black Polish. He is full of personality. His daughter a polish/old english mix - runs to greet us. We trimmed the feathers around our full polish hen's eyes. She couldn't see well & was...

    male coturnix killed by females

We had coturnix for more than 2 years. We had to move the birds around several times until they had compatible cage mates. We incubated some eggs. We finally got tired of the whole aggressiveness towards each other. We had quail that were tame enough that the children used them for showmanship...

Polish - Is this a roo?

We hatched several chicks- several breeds/mixes this spring. Too many cockerals. The polish cockeral was the last to get wattles and crow. The tail feathers look like a rooster. The head feathers are more "dreadlock" than "bouffant".

    Rooster died-Want to know why

Chickenboy's very first bird died this morning. Buff bantam rooster , 2 years old - AKA Monster baby was in an isolation cage overnight. History - he has been the lowest rooster in the pecking order- living with a d'uccle and an English Gamebird rooster and 15 bantam hens. This arrangement had...

    friendliest breed ?

My favorite friendly hens are a Belgian d'uccle and a Buff Brahma Bantam. They are very sweet, follow me, perch on my arm, beg for treats and like to be held. One of my son's first hens a red pyle Old English hen is very friendly. Whatever breed you get - work with them as chicks. All of our...

    Preserving feathers

I used the Borax method. It dried it within a couple of days. I changed out the Borax after the first 2 days and replaced with fresh. I only saved the hackles and saddle.

White crested black polish rooster - 16 weeks

White Crested black polish rooster- 16 weeks. We have both parents, friendly birds. Adult rooster is son's showmanship bird. Beautiful birds - but some defects- adult rooster has an incomplete v comb on one side and a couple of wing feathers with partial white. Adult rooster is good with his...

Look What We Found In The Yard Today!!!!!!!!

Congrats, Glad the new family is doing well. Our 3rd broody - a silver duckwing old english gamebird - started hatching out her eggs today. We have 3 babies so far. I'm addicted more than chickenboy. Chickenboy made me place an ad on Craigslist for the extra roosters. He wants to keep all of...

Look What We Found In The Yard Today!!!!!!!!

I would transfer the hen, chicks and eggs to a large cage. We are on our 3rd broody hen. We had to transfer the first mom and babies/eggs to a cage in the house - they hatched the end of March and our weather was quite cold. Check out the broody hen thread. Enjoy

    Assorted Straight Run Bantam chicks

Are these from Tractor Supply? In Michigan last year the feather footed were a mix of Bantam Brahmas and D'Uccles(mille, white, and porcelain). We saw a list of what our possible options were and just guessed.

    coop cleaning time--YUCK

Chickenboy and I were out cleaning coops & barns this evening. The snow had melted enough to get from the barn to the compost dump hill. The small coop I clean every other day. This is a raised coop - so when the snow is deep - I dump the muck under the coop until the weekend and haul at one...
