I went and got one of the chicks tonight because I wanted to trim its crossover beak and OMG. It was covered in mites.
Forgive me but they got a dusting. I can’t leave them in that condition.
And now I am full of mites again. I am a bit cross with myself for letting the situation get to this.
Yes, I washed all the bedding, mattress cover, clothes, towels, in hot water and detergent.
That’s where the worst of the bites are on me, the bra and the knickers edges.
I had the same problem a couple of years ago. But this time, it affected me a lot worse.
Thanks for the product names...
This is what we did...
We dusted lightly on the shavings and just dusted the mother hen. The chicks no longer bury themselves under her since they have all their feathers so I figured that they would be ok. Then we sprayed with a solution of something my husband got from the farm supplies place...
I've sent my husband for Absorbacide which is a natural liquid spray.
I suspect they are the red mites. I can see tiny, dark brown mites occasionally on me. Barely visible they are so small but I'm reacting badly to them.
I’ve not sighted any movement on the chicks, just small quantities of powdery white on the base of their feathers.
I itch like crazy so I need to take care of me, my clothes and bedding too fairly quickly or it will just recontaminate everything.
I dusted the chickens for mites because they have mites.
I cleaned and dusted the layer hens coop and the hens but haven’t done the broody hen and chicks coop yet. They all free range together. It just seem like I should be doing the lot or I won’t eradicate them.
how soon can I dust chicks for mites?
I have a powder called Pestene which is sulfur and rotenone.
The chicks are now 5 weeks.
I dusted all the other chickens but not the broody hen and the chicks. They are all free range.
Sorry, I’ve not had any notices of new posts or I would have been back sooner.
I found this post that shows d'uccle comb development by 4 weeks
https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/mille-fleur-duccle-4-weeks-pullet-or-cockerel.512292/
Mine still don’t show any comb.
I’ll take new photos...
My chicks are three week old today and I think they are all pullets.
Their combs are pale yellow, almost white and can't be seen rising above the feathers in profile side on.
1. I think this is a porcelain pullet
2. Silver laced? Not sure if a pullet or cockerel
3. White pullet...
Thanks for your reply.
I was just looking up frizzle chicks and I wonder if I have a frizzle or a frizzle cross by mistake?
The breeder had all the day old chicks mixed together and she pulled out and counted the d'uccles but I wonder.... ?
I have a very broody pekin hen and this time, instead of fighting it, I went with it and bought her 4 one day old Belgian D’Uccles. She pecked them once, I stick them under her and she turned into an excellent mama straight away.
Anyway, one of the chicks was slower to grow and slept a lot...
