@EggWalrus I have had leghorn eggs from a friend I used to swap for quail eggs. As you say, they were colossal, or humongous as I like to put it! Great for baking. The family love to eat bantam eggs best. A good sized yolk for the size of the egg and less white in proportion.
@BGcoop @nurturedgarden That's made me laugh, as I've only had one Orpington and she laid a medium sized egg - bigger than a bantam but nowhere near the size of my standard fowl. I thought that was what they all did because I know they're a dual purpose bird. Maybe it was just my Steroids...
@RJClaveau Welcome :frow BYC is just the best
The key to everyone getting along is having the space and you look like you've got that a-plenty. Just fabulous. No more boys, but I can see you adding to your flock very soon. Is having too many chickens even a thing?
@nurturedgarden I think it's a pullet as well, not only by its appearance, but also because if it was a cockerel I would expect it to be crowing by now. So good news for you!
I had an Orpington just like that once. It was the gentle giant of the flock and so friendly - was really upset when I...
@Crazy Cajun I'm sure there is a technical reply coming, but with my quail, I continue with turkey crumb all the time they are under heat. As soon as they are feathered up I introduce them to the flock, where they only have access to pellets. If this is your first venture into the joy of...
Thank you to everyone at BYC who posted on my thread - all your comments and suggestions were much appreciated. Finally I know exactly what my gorgeous little flock are so I can begin my search for new bloodlines.
I have also started posting my own contributions to other people's topics where I...
@Meg-in-MT I absolutely agree with you! I have tried, but found it psychologically impossible to eat anything I have personally raised, although since I have been keeping poultry I have a new respect for farmers and smallholders and for the well-being of all livestock. I mostly buy my meat...
@CountryFlock I missed a couple of posts somehow. I apologise for not replying earlier. I have never heard of Neston poultry, but will reach out to them at the weekend. Even if they don't have them, there's a chance they will know a breeder who does. It's all very exciting. Thank you.
@CountryFlock Thanks for this. I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of what makes a good or bad watermael - too busy trying to find out what they are - but I'll happily take "not that bad" from someone who knows what they are talking about! :) They are very interesting and entertaining...
@Kennyhasquails I hadn't heard of this before, but just read up on it. I don't think there's any definitive right or wrong answer Kenny, although people will have very strong opinions as you have already read on your thread. The thing is you can only do what you can do, and anything is better...
@goldysgirl I am sure he was grateful to have you there, slipping away peacefully after having had such a long, loving life with you.
I agree. The first time I experienced a sick hen in my flock I had a devil of a job finding a vet who would even see it. They gave me medication and then as we...
