Comparing Red Rangers to Salmon Faverolles

Knew we were doing them early, but just couldn't stand them anymore :) They will be perfect for a dinner for 2.

Comparing Red Rangers to Salmon Faverolles

We just sent 10 Red Rangers to freezer camp at 10 weeks. No health problems like the Cornish X but, not impressed by size or white meat. All in all, I will just stick with my extra Salmon Faverolles roosters for eating birds. They take a bit longer, but are not smelly and stupid :)

Introducing a new chick with my other chicks?

I mix young chicks with very good results. The older ones show the younger ones the "ropes".

BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

Love the dog pic. Our GSD loved to "Mommy" new chicks for us. She was on guard and taking care of "her" babies.

We have electric all over the coop and run. We have a friend who is the "bear guy" for Fish and Wildlife take a look. He thought it was really well protected. One thing to remember is use the proper fence charger. You need a very high shock - one that will stop a buffalo, not just the ones...

    Faverolles Thread

Mine don't really have a good spot to go broody. That's why I think they only go a few hours. The nest boxes are roll out, so they really have to work to keep the eggs gathered into a clutch.

Mine like to go broody, for about 4 hours.

BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

I am happy to report that this has worked extremely well. The duck/water mess is going to a container under the crib (easy to dump and replace) which keeps the water mess from being in all the bedding. Plenty of room to run around, so after this will be a transition run in the coop so the big...

Solid walls for run to hide chickens from neighbors

How about planting a row of evergreens (not right up to the coop). Would help hide the coop in a more natural way and would also help block/absorb the sound much better than walls.

    Love our chickens

Fencing is the answer. I've found if you trap out most animals, it leaves a "void" and more come in to the, now free, territory.

Farm Innovators 2400 Incubator Seeking Mentor

Since this is a "new to you" incubator, don't rely on one thermometer/hydrometer. They can be off and if you're running the temp too high, you'll kill the chicks. Throw in a couple, until you know you have accurate readings.

What should I name my small "farm"?

Take your time, the perfect name will come to you.

    About to buy!

Alot depends on where you are (climate, predators, etc) Just remember, everybody has their own way of doing things and your way will work out great.

You can plant potatoes in big bags or they sell potato growing bins - so it's not too late.
