Using Broody Hens to Hatch Eggs?

When I pulled the chicks off mama, I waited until they were dry and fluffy. Then I put a light cloth over mama's head and lifted her up and pulled chicks. I wouldn't wait until she is off her nest, I think they would be hard to wrangle once on the ground!

    Which is less worse

UPDATE! I took the 4 chicks, kept them overnight. Yesterday the hen got off the nest and squacked for like 2 hours. I finally told the kids to give her a chick and when I did, she immediately stoped squacking. Then after seeing the baby with mama and how they both did well together, we decided...

So we have 4 chicks now, 2 Buff Orpington, one Orpington/Red Leghorn cross, one Orpington Easter Egger cross (we have a Orpington Roo). There are SEVEN eggs this hen is laying on. I wish everyone would stop laying there! I'm going to be hatching one chick a day at this rate! Originally I put...

OK so I tried to see if I could put up some cardboard, or put the box in a larger box, but neither worked out very well so I pulled the two fluffy chicks out and saw the other one, still damp and a wet chick, so I'll get them later tonight...This hatching thing STRESSES ME OUT!!!!

oooo that might work with the higher box. The kids want the mama to raise the babies not us. I like the idea of brooding them my self, lol.

I did put a little box with straw in it, I just worry that they will hop out.

    Which is less worse

Because there are still chicks hatching, I'm putting this here. I put a nest under my setting hen with 3 eggs under her, (in a PP, I had mentioned that she had been setting and I was worried she was going to loose eggs/babies because she was sitting on a dresser in the garage. Turns out she was...

OK I'll do it then. I'll get her a place all ready and move her. I'll let you know how it goes! Thanks! Erica

    Dare I move her?

My two hens went missing a while back. I figured they are setting. Well sure enough, I found them today. They both are in the garage. One is on the ground behind the welder. I'm not worried about her. But the other is on a dresser, half on the dresser and half on a picture frame that is leaning...

Help me figure this one out, if you would...

You probably right, me reading too much into it, lol. Does a drake really need more ducks? How many should I get him? I may have room for one or two more. I do have to say that I have some love crazy fowl. I had a guinea cock in love with a hen too. I don't know what it is about my chickens...

Help me figure this one out, if you would...

I have a pair of ducks. A drake Campbell and a hen Orpingting (?). They were hatched like in June or July. The male has been mating the female for quite some time but the hen has not laid an egg yet. Recently, like in the last week, the drake has been chasing and stalking one of my chicken hens...

    Egg bound???

I think I figured out what has happened, I have another Maran hen that I JUST put in with the pair and the next morning one was out and I just assumed it was the new one, but maybe it was the old one that got out and the new one is in with the roo and is taking a long time getting use to the...

    WTB Hens near Modesto CA

Hi Sindoora, I'm debating whether to post this or not because I love my chickens, lol. But my husband thinks we have too many feathers and we will be getting more as my daughter will be doing poultry for 4-H. I have a Lakenvelder that I may part with so your chicken isn't alone. She was hatched...

    Egg bound???

She was hatched 3/8/08 so that'd make her...what...6 months. She began to lay at the first part of August. She is a Cuckoo Maran. And she eats Lay pellets. I think the 16% protien. There are feathers around but she still looks good. thanks for the help! Erica

    Egg bound???

I'm sure this has been addressed, but I am on a really REALLY slow dial up computer (I connect at 26 Kbps!) and I'm homeschooling so I can't sit and wait for pages to load, especially when I am looking for something and needing to browes thru several pages. Anyway if someone knows a good...
