    are chickens pets?

My chickens are not pets, they are livestock just like anything else with the exception of the dogs. Nothing becomes a pet when it is eventually going to become dinner. I do have my favorites but that is where it ends.

If you had fifteen minutes to talk about ducks to people who own other livestock, what would you say

The need for water deep enough for them to submerge their heads.

    Duck pen idea

Thanks all. I am planning it all out still but I am not trying to raise feed for the ducks but rather for me. I am trying to make the most effective use of the land and using something for more than one purpose seems to be the best thing to do. I am in Montana so what ever I grow will be slow. I...

Did you know ducks lay eggs in water?

The ones that were packed in lard went bad fast. the ones coated in lard did way better. Here is the link to the article... http://www.motherearthnews.com/Sustainable-Farming/1977-11-01/Fresh-Eggs.aspx

Did you know ducks lay eggs in water?

Actually coating them in lard may not be the best but if you are trying to live without refrigeration or limited refrigeration then coating them with lard is a method that you can use. Lard is something that you will have on hand also with any pork that you cook. Keep in mind that you only need...

    Heron ate our ducklings..

If there are any bass or catfish in the pond, they have also been known to take a duckling. Bass more than catfish but they are both predators.

    Anyone want to give

It would probably help if you told people where you were.

    Out of duck food!

No but I also find that if I buy the whole grains (except I get cracked corn) no rolled or crimped and mix it all myself then I save about $30 over the same amount of processed feed and the ducks seem to love it. and even with 28 ducks I have enough with one purchase to last 2 months...

    SWEDISH Duck Thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A little while ago I picked up 10 ducks and the owner did not know what they were but after seeing the photos in this thread I am starting to think that they may be Swedish. The three lighter colored ones in the front are drakes and the black one in the back right corner is a drake. All the rest...

Did you know ducks lay eggs in water?

They will actually last longer than chicken eggs. In learning about egg storage for the non laying months, I found out that washing the eggs shortens the life of the egg because you remove the protective coating. Now I do wash the dirty eggs because they are usually pretty nasty but then after...

    Duck pen idea

No one here knows yet but I live off the grid and I am slowly working to make my place self sufficient and with that comes a lot of thought and ideas. One idea is to have different kinds of fruit that did not need a lot of tending such as grapes. I remember when I was little my grandparents had...

    duck bulling

Wait until they are old enough to defend themselves. I have a bantam rooster in with my ducks (pekins too) and they do not mess with him. Hell he even goes after me from time to time. They tried to pick on him at first and he made them back off. Now they give him a wide berth. The new 4 month...

Did you know ducks lay eggs in water?

All you have to do is wash them off and then rinse with vinegar or something like that to kill all the bad stuff. Besides, you are not eating the shells, are you? I keep a jug of vinegar for disinfecting all sorts of stuff and yes it will kill bacteria. Now if the eggs have been gathering for a...

Free Range Ducks - Mission Impossible?

No they are not minks but they are in the same family. Quote: I think it was because you put (mink) in parenthesis after the weasels. Some people just have to prove how smart they are.

A little Swedish in the flock.

Went out yesterday and picked up 8 silver Swedish ducks. Drake and 2 hens along with 5 of their offspring. I also picked up a couple of roosters. Total now is 28 ducks and a bunch of chickens.
