    Staggered hatch

That's good to hear. It's getting dark here now, and my fourth and last chick seems to be on course to hatch sometime tonight or on the morning of its "hatch day." The mother doesn't seem concerned and is still on the egg with her babies (the 3 day old is huge compared to the one that hatched...

    Staggered hatch

My silkie hen has four eggs all set on the same day. However, one chick hatched on day 18, another on day 19, one on day 20 (today) and the last one looks like it may hatch this afternoon or tomorrow morning. Since the eggs were all set on the same day, I am baffled as to why this may be...

    Breaking Yolks

Do you live somewhere hot? If so, are you collecting promptly and refrigerating your eggs? If not, the heat could be causing the yolk breakage. It's not harmful if that's the cause. I live in a subtropical country and everyone has that problem in the summer.

Storing hatching eggs in the tropics?

OK, if I should keep my eggs for hatching in the fridge, should I put the ones I've already connected in now or leave them at room temperature? Also, how cold is too cold to keep in the fridge? I might look into getting a thermometer to check my fridge temperature to make sure it's at a good...

    Wheat bran

Are you sure there's no corn? If not, maybe try rice. Neither is particularly healthy, but they add calories. Do you let them out to eat grass and bugs during the day? If so, they'll be just fine. Try not to feed to much rice or wheat though. They won't stop when they're full and they'll get...

    Wheat bran

I live in a place where chicken feed is available, but not commonly used. If you can free range your chickens, they'll probably do fine of what they can fine supplemented with cracked corn and kitchen scraps. Do you have access to corn and soy or some other legume? If so, I have some homemade...

Storing hatching eggs in the tropics?

I want to hatch eggs from my silkies, but im not sure how best to store them to increase the probability of them hatching. Where I live, average temperatures range from about 70 at night to 80-100 during the day. My silkie has been practicing sitting on eggs, so I've been saving some hoping...

    Chicken not sleeping enough?

About a week ago, I moved my chickens (a pair of silkies) into a new pen. I live in a tropical area, so the pen is just chain-link fencing with shade cloth and a straw roof. They have access to a nesting box big enough to sleep in and access to a roosting area, which they play on during the day...

    silkie sexing

I have a ~5 month old chick that I'm hoping is a pullet, but I'm really not sure. This is her: She is slightly smaller than her brother, who is crowing, but hasn't laid an egg and doesn't seem to be interested in doing so. She sometimes scuffles with my rooster, although she's definitely...
