i agree to the side by side route. i do that these days and never have any problems anymore. the BEST way to go is have a broody hatch your chicks and they'll be accepted by the flock pretty much on day one. nothing better than a week old chick running around doin whatever it wants in a flock...

the pecking order isnt a "phase" its a lifestyle for these critters. one will give in and one will take over, its natural. EXCEPT when theres no where to run. thats when birds are pecked to death. Its a hard lesson to learn, and i know it from experience. always give them somewhere to run to!

In my opinion, it'll be a lil while longer for your bird. that comb is still very small for a leghorn. let that baby get a lil floppy and then start asking! ha

i put out chick feed for the chicks, the hens eat it, layer for the old gals, the chicks eat it.... chickens eat anything...... and they always grow just fine.... "my kid eats off the adult menu, will it kill him?" no

all the chickens ive ever had were afraid of me until they got big and smart and remembered that i was the guy bringin the food.... so like everyone else says, treats.

If theyre not used to you feeding them bugs, which it sounds like they arent, theyre probably freaked out by you making the "throw the insect in the run motion" and arent comfortable to peck and look for bugs..... theyll get used to it eventually... or maybe try to do it more covertly...
