    Starboard And The Snake

This is the second snake I watched Star kill and eat. The first one was larger but I didn't have a camera handy. I was lucky this time.

I currently have 2 Black Giant X NH hens; Port and Starboard, nearly identical except for their comb flop. Their brother is Rusty one of 4 Roos penned seperately, 2 Black Giant Pullets with 2 Black Giant cockerals, and 3 New Hampshire hens. (11/22/08). Also 9 Delaware x Cornish chicks hatched...

Funniest Things A City Slicker Has Ever Said To You?

Quote: That's actually a myth. My cats both are well-fed mousers. Actually, Rowdy is a mouser, a wood-ratter, and has been known to tree raccoons. It was fun watching Uncle Rowdy teaching Emily the kitten how to mouse. He would bring in a mouse, take it to the top of the stairs, then bat it...

Funniest Things A City Slicker Has Ever Said To You?

Quote: If she has 7 then someone needs to tell her what causes that. Well said cowboy! I don't know if the chicken "kiss" could really be explained as "love" considering the apparent brutality of the act. But considering one's audience, perhaps that is the best way to explain it. lol

I wonder if dubbing is as painful as piercings, or circumcision, or tattoos? I've come home to find roos with torn and bloody combs and wattles from fighting. I found one with a hole torn in his comb and another with a chunk bitten out. It seems that if it is red, it is a target to peck at...

Quote: That's a line from a foke song. Red Sovine & Johnny Bond - The Gear Jammer And The Hobo Not being dumb its a country joke. I've heard that one quite often as well. along with the advice; "Just turn it over and put the flat side up and it will be fine".

Funniest Things A City Slicker Has Ever Said To You?

Death and Dying, Sex and Reproduction, and Where food comes from are not taught in schools because they have always been observed at home on the farm. Now that we are removed from farm life these areas are giving society fits. If city slickers knew about these rules, perhaps a lot of silly...

From my end of the Coop. My White Cornish hen was found in a nesting box with two chicks, one of which wasn't hers. Now for a hen that grabbed a chick that was a few days old and flings it in the air with seemingly violent intent, this came to me as a bit of a supprise. The chick is the...

Quote: Howyadoin' Shelleyd? Good to hear from you. Unfortunately I have 35 pound feeders that I only have to fill about once a week. So I am not the food guy. I do come down a couple times a day and give scratch treats but that doesn't seem to have any real connection to me either. I...

Wow! One of the newly hatched chicks about 4-6 days old fell out of its nest and got in with the other young chicks. You would have thought that it was a wicked beast from hell the way the cornish hen grabbed it an gave it a fling. I guess I now know what happened to one of her chicks that...

Current news from my end of the coop. The sixth and hopefully last of my broody hens finally hatched a single chick after being on and off a nest for the past four weeks. It also appears that she is molting. She is doing okay, just appears to be stressed. She is still sitting on the eggs...

Can a broody hatch a goose egg?

Probably not. Shelleyed2008 would be someone to contact. She has a link to hatching goose eggs. I don't know much about goose eggs but as I understand it the goose will get off the nest to get wet then return to the nest and eggs soaking them in water fairly regularly. Good luck.

    Can you induce broodiness?

I agree with Joe B. Make the box about 3 foot square with a nest box inside. This allows her to get off the nest box and eat, drink and poop off the nest. It also keeps other hens from donating eggs when and if she goes broody. It will also serve as a brooder for the first week. I've had...

I kind of have another question/observation. I have one 7 week old chick with no broody who keeps insisting on getting back into the brooder pen with three momma hens and their chicks. It's not too big a deal. But the observation concern of mine is the momma hens and their chicks. I have two...
