    Are maran's freindly?

I have Marans, but they are young, between six weeks and three months. Not had ANY problems with aggression so far! I have blue splash, wheaton, and black copper, and boy are they pretty!

Selling your Animals while home Alone

I don't. I try to meet people somewhere if my husband isn't going to be around. My favorite spot is the Barnes & Nobles parking lot. There's always a lot of people, plus you get a lot of random people coming up to ask about your chickens while you wait on the person you're meeting. :) I live...

    Best way to butcher?

We slit their throats. Haven't tried the chopping.... I'm too scared I'll miss or something, and I'm not sure how to hold the chicken's head anyway with a hatchet, plus, no matter how much I trust my husband, I don't like a hatchet coming down between my hands! Ha! Slitting their throats isn't...

Will a rooster try to mate with pulletts

I agree, please watch with the other hens. I am working on combining my flock of ten, three month old birds with my flock of 20 six-week-old birds. I am doing it very slowly and gradually. Day three and when I let the young birds out with the older ones, the older ones finally didn't race over...

    Hello from Southern Oregon

Welcome! You are going to live this site. Any question I have I immediately go here. I have 21 chicks outside. They are about four weeks old. I live in southern Illinois. We've had weather in the 80s lately, but it's gotten as low as the 40s. They're doing great.

I got a puppy on Sat!

Sooo cute! Congrats! I just love puppies. Only word of advice.... If you were eyeglasses, make sure you keep them up high! Our puppy was OBSESSED with my glasses. She even stole them off the bathroom vanity while I was in the shower once. I went through three pairs between March and this past...

    Bumblefoot?

I haven't had a case of bumblefoot yet, but I've printed this out https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/bumblefoot-how-to-treat-your-chickens-with-surgery-graphic-pics for whenever I do.

Need help with NC chicken laws.

Have you called the county's zoning board or animal control?

    Introducing new chicks

I would play it by ear.... I won't introduce my chicks to a full grown flock until they are all about the same size. I have combined chicks that were up to several weeks in age difference, though, without problems. However, if you decide to introduce the chicks to your adult flock after a few...

    New to the coop!!!

This place is really amazing. I am learning so much on here. Definitely a lifesaver with chickens. Welcome to the site! I think you will find chickens get addicting pretty fast. I started out with four last summer.... I now have 38. What to do?

IDK what to do w/o my chickens

Oh, I am so sorry. Looks like they had wonderful lives with you. So glad you found somebody who will treasure them, too.

    leghorns and golden comets

Hmm, well, introducing new members to a flock should be done gradually and under supervision. For all you know, the rooster might have been sick or already near death.
