I love chickens because chickens are chickens. They don't presume to be something they are not. You can always count on a chicken to be a chicken. Chickens are beautiful in simply being chickens... similar to the way a flower is beautiful simply by being a flower....
Cute silkie you have there. Are you still working with this this one? Any pictures?
Brody's Broodello :
You can get a columbian silkie by breeding a buff & lavender. I have a cock but he is our on lease right now. That is the breeding that will give you that color. Hope this helps

Greenthumb,
Congrats on your new additions and I know what you mean about chickens being fun. For me, they are both relaxing and fun. I started with trying to hatch 100+ quail eggs that I received in the mail. It wasn't long after those quails started laying eggs that I had to hatch my first...
Congrats on getting your first hatch started!!!! I always try to hatch more eggs than I want to keep as I take into account that not all of mine hatch and I don't want too many males roaming the yard. You have quite the assortment though. Once you start hatching your own eggs you get hooked to...
Once upon a time, silkies were only available in white from what I hear. Suffice it to say, genes are often introduced from one source or another to create new breeds. One persons mutt is another persons dream in the making. I'm of the opinion that you breed what makes you happy and you go with...

I think this is fascinating as well. I like it when science brings to light evolution and how it works in tangible ways. Chicken teeth... gotta love em.
Emily,
I have had the same problem as you. New additions can lead to much blood shed especially when the area is a small one. Giving them more room fixed my issues as well as creating a hospital wing/isolation wing injuries. A bloody bird will continue to get pecked until it is healed.

I share your enthusiasm where it concerns a mille fleur silkie. I'm thinking that one way to go would be to use a group of silkie roosters to mille fleur d'uccle hens... as that is what I currently possess. Other possibilities exist of course as some nice cochin mille fleurs also exist. I just...
Wish you luck with your new baby. I have a small Cotchin hatched out of a blue egg myself. To me, I don't see much Ameraucana in her, but I'm hoping she will give me some blue eggs.

A bit about me, I served in the Army for 13 years so I haven't had much time to just sit down with the chickens so to speak. I fell in love with chickens when I was stationed in Belgium and saw my first Mille Fleur D'uccle. I've been out of the service for 2 years now and have acquired...
I feed my coturnix and my chickens boiled eggs shell and all. Boiling kills any bacteria that may be lingering in the shells. My baby coturnix are fed boiled eggs exclusively for the first 2 days as a general rule. I also mash up the eggs for easy access to the nutrients. Just my two cents...
