Lovely rooster. I have 5 hens and a rooster of this breed and 13 of 3 other large size breeds. I decided on this breed because of them being friendly and their ability to turn other breeds broody.
But to find out that the roosters may be protective of their hens is wonderful.. Learning that...
I fed mine black seed sunflowers mixed in with the feed and my chickens always ate the sunflowers first. However when my daughters family ate the eggs they said that they did not like the taste. Anyone else have this problem?
I don't live in Calif anymore but I have at three different times over a span of about 19 years. Northern Calif to me is by far the prettiest and most friendly. However the desert along the Colorado had its charm too. That was then not sure how it is now.
Thanks for your ovation even though I don't know where to find it or where to give one. Eventually i will find my way around this very nice and friendly site.
Guess you can tell by my "name" I am from Florida. That is North Florida to you. Believe me there are more than one Florida's. In reality there are South and Central and North. All with different ways of life and attitudes. North Florida is country folk even around our cities.
Glad you are happy with your hens.
They are really pretty and Houdini gets along with all the hens but one of her sisters started messing with her and another side of her came out. Wow she kicked *** and took names and the Mean hen cried uncle and ran. lol.
Her sister hens have a hatred...
Mine are not bantams
I have 3 of these roosters and the reason I keep all three is because 2 of them are wonderful for taking care of the hens. When they sense danger they round the hens up and bring them to the pen or under the rose bush. They know when a hen is missing and round her up...
hmmmmmmmm One of my 3 roos managed to squeeze into the hens special little house this evening. He is now in there with 7 hens. Oh my which one will go broody or will they all? lol
I think I will try them. Is it true that the hens are good setters?
I had 2 good egg purchases from online sellers. Got 5 hens out of 5 eggs which I put under a setting hen on the 1st purchase.
On the 2nd purchaseit was not the sellers fault getting 5 roos, and getting such a bad hatch...
I currently have 3 Lavender Orphington roos. Two are fairly agressive but teachable and one is in love with me. They guard the hens, and when free ranging they round up any hen who doesn't stay with the flock. They bring them into the pen or under the rose bush if they sense danger. I can...
