    My hens won't use their ramp or go back into the coop without assistance.

    The girls eventually figured out to hop-up into the coop unassisted (instead of huddling in the corner of their run against the gate, waiting for us to put them in). I think they wanted to stay together, and one of them couldn't hop-up into the coop easily (chubby meat bird). Year 2: No meat...

    Winterizing your coop? We used dense foam from insulated concrete forms, left over from a construction job, between 2 layers of plywood. The ceiling is also insulated. The coop is raised so that the chickens can take cover under it in the summer if they want to. We ensured all cracks or gaps...
  4. When Rob's father finished building his house, he had some of these insulated forms left over. Very dense foam! We took these apart and used the foam to insulate our coop. We were amazed that it helped to keep the coop cool in the summer, and it definitely helped this winter when temperatures dropped to -28°C / -18°F

  8. Coop Construction: The ramp. Put all that work into the ramp and the hens don't use it. We just prop the door open and they jump in instead. Looks red because the wood on the inside of the coop is mahogany.

    Poultry breeds to date include red sex link, black sex link, helmeted guinea fowl. And we had 4 meat birds given to us from a school/classroom hatch.
