    Please explain paint genetics!

I have talked to a lot of master breeders of Paints at shows and some of them hold that it DOES matter if your black is out of paint lines or not. I’ve bred them for several years now and have concluded that they are right in choosing the best blacks out of those lines to bring out better and...

Eggs not developing - please help me figure out what's wrong

Hi there! I second the thought about buying a secondary thermometer. I got a good thermometer/hygrometer (for humidity) off of Amazon for around $10. I was appalled to see that my new incubator was a few degrees off --which is no big deal if you're around 99*F, but if you were on the high side...

Silkies and Silkie Bantams book by Van Dort

Hi! I'm looking either for feedback on or for a copy of the book, "Silkies and Silkie Bantams" by Van Dort. It's fairly expensive and looks like it may be a one-time read. I'm hesitant to buy it for that price and then have buyer's remorse. Any Silkie breeders out there who want to chime in...

USPS embargo on live animals (chicks) through Feb 26, 2021!

Tractor Supply has their own supply chain on their trucks. I think it should be fine. They can do what they like and don't have to be dependent on the post office that is currently backlogged. :)

USPS embargo on live animals (chicks) through Feb 26, 2021!

The embargo notice that I saw was for the day it came out during the storms until Feb 26. Everyone who orders chicks after that should be fine, but if your shipping date was during those days, you may need to re-schedule your order.

How do you feed your guineas when they are part of a mixed flock?

Kilsharion, I LOVE your rabbit hutch!! We just got someone's Easter bunnies they decided were too much effort to care for. They're young, possibly females, and a pretty light caramel color. I don't know what breed, but they're so cute. My kids were pumped after they saw your hutch and want...

    Taste of Duck Eggs

Hey! Welcome to BYC. Lots of good stuff here :) I think they are probably pretty similar to most other duck eggs in that because of the extra omega-3 fatty acids they are denser and because of the difference you shouldn't cook them at too high a heat too fast. So in boiling and baking you...

How do you feed your guineas when they are part of a mixed flock?

Wow! Thanks, Kilsharion and Peeps for all the great information! I needed that, especially on the fermented feed. I read some about it earlier, and they made it seem so complex, and I know people through the ages doing it had to have had a simpler method or they never would've done it. Thank...

    Taste of Duck Eggs

I have some dietary issues with getting enough good fats and B vitamins in my diet, and I had read that duck eggs have more of the good long-chain omega-3 fatty acids that you need. These good fats are responsible for the feeling of being "fuller" when you eat them. My ducks are just babies...

    setting incubator. i need help

Hi! I just wanted to add that in this forum there are some great threads on how to make your own incubators, hatch eggs, candle them, etc. Great trouble-shooting stuff like have the humidity at ~30% for Marans eggs, and 45% for all others until lockdown, then up to 60% during hatching. Move...

How do you feed your guineas when they are part of a mixed flock?

I also have a mixed brooder with 2 week old chicks and three guineas. This is our first guinea hatch, and I didn't know to up their protein until yesterday. We moved them to 24% protein because that was the most we could find at Tractor Supply, and the other area feed stores are sold out of...
