Thanks for the input, that's a lot of good information! The more I think about it, I think if I do get geese it might work better to pasture them with my goats. That way they would be fenced in, and they wouldn't just be loose around the children.
I'm going to keep thinking about it and do...
I'm thinking of getting some geese, but I've only ever raised chickens and ducks before, so I have a few questions.
First, is it true that all they need is a three-sided shed for shelter? Won't raccoons, possums or skunks get them? Those are basically the only predators around that I have to...
You mean you'd get some golden neck chicks and some mille fleur, or do you mean that the chicks would all have some golden neck characteristics and some mille fleur characteristics?
I'm just curious because I've only ever had mille fleurs, but I now have some golden necks, and I just wondered...
I'm looking for several Australorp pullets/young hens or Orpingtons. Also want a rooster of either breed, but must be docile and completely non-aggressive, as I have small children.
Located between Nappanee and Goshen, and don't want to travel very far.
Next question: Does anyone feed their chickens garlic? Do you add it to your feed before you ferment, or do you just sprinkle some on top when you feed it?
I thought it was important not to close it up entirely, because you want air to be able to circulate? Or do you just set the lid on top of the towel without pushing it down to close it?
Is there a way to keep the fruit flies (I think that's what they are, anyway) out of the feed? When I take the cover off the bucket to get some feed out, a whole cloud of them flies up in my face. It seems like they'll lay eggs in the feed and then I'll have larvae in there, doesn't it? I'd like...
I'm not sure if the term organic has much to do with the fish that are used to make the meal or not. Non-organic fish meal has a preservative added that has some health concerns. It is not approved for organic use, so organic fish meal uses a difference kind of preservative called Naturox that...
I want to mix my own feed, and would like to be able to add an animal protein, especially during the winter months when my birds won't be getting 'animal' protein from bugs, worms, etc.
