I have a buff who is acting like this, about 25 weeks, hasn't been laying for long. She sat on the nest for hours, even overnight while the others roosted! I wondered if it was broodiness. We don't have a rooster, though...doesn't matter, I'm assuming?
Thanks--I'll check the bag. It's the same feed I've been using the 4 weeks, but I'm about to start a new bag. I'll check what it has in it. I do sometimes give them cottage cheese, but no other protein source, except the worms they may find now.
I don't think it's broken...he let's me handle him without much peeping, but he seems to be losing more mobility as the night goes on. I think he may be getting worse. I don't know what might have happened.
I only noticed this today, so I don't think my chick has had this problem for long. I noticed him walking strangely with his leg turned somewhat outward. When I picked him up, I noticed that the joint on the affected leg seems larger. Maybe this has been gradually developing. He's able to...
This morning when I went out to see them, they all looked very comfortable, despite the cold and rain outside! The temp inside is nicer now, thanks to my kindly husband who closed some of the vents and lowered the heat lamps. They had a nice treat of scrambled eggs last night, and I think I'll...
My 2.5 week old chicks moved out to the coop yesterday. I thought they needed some more room, so we put the heat lamps out there and snuggled them in with lots of bedding. It got cold last night, but they seem to be doing okay. I worried ALL night about them!
They loved having some worms...
This happened to our Kindergarten teachers this weekend. They were all taking turns coming in to turn the eggs and everything was fine until Sunday. On Sunday morning, the temp was 115 in one incubator! Don't know for how long. She is miserable! She wants to know if there is any chance...I...
How old are your chicks? I'm thinking of putting mine out in the coop with the heat lamp and a draft guard. I know lots of people brood in the coop, but it has been so cold. It's still 30's and 40's at night, but nice during the day. Think they'd be okay at 2 1/2 weeks? Coop is secure.
I have 9 "packing peanuts" that are the friendliest chicks in the brooder. They are 2 1/2 weeks old, and will go to a farm when they get their feathers. Two will get to live there as breeders and the others will be going in the freezer. I don't really think I want a rooster, but my friendly...
My German Short Haired Pointer is also very uptight about our 1 1/2 week old chicks. We've had the chicks exactly 1 week now. She always goes with me to check the chicks. She quivers and whines. A couple of times she has acted like she would try to scoop one up in her mouth if she could...
Can anyone give me some ideas for "toys" to put in the brooder for the chicks to peck at or entertain themselves with? Also, I have heard people talk about a treat list. Can anyone direct me to that? My chicks are less than a week old, but I want to be prepared!
It looks alot like the ones I think are my Marans. Mine are feather-legged Cuckoo Marans, so I'm fairly certain which ones they are. Mine do have white on top of their heads, but look like yours otherwise.
The chicks all made it through their first day. I spent so much time watching them and worrying over every little thing. One was sleeping too much. A few seemed to be pasting up. Each time, I jumped on my computer to read an appropriate posting from BYC, and each time felt reasurred. We...
