I'm very relieved to read that! Thank you. I'll add a brick or two for them. I usually prop one of their water vessels on one, so they alread have some idea of what it might be.
Two of my quail - Jupiter the rooster and Eris the hen - have recently had nails come off.
Jupiter's nail came off last night while I was attempting to remove a developing poop ball. Eris had a nail a week or two ago which was growing more and more yellow (see pic) and which was very, very...
She's been acting normally, yes. Poop can still come out, so far as I can tell. Is it normal for a hen to retain an egg if she thinks laying conditions are poor?
I have four layers and three of them have been laying consistently for several weeks now (Special thanks to Nabiki for the help!)
One of them seems to be laying sporadically, and I haven't been able to figure out which one. However, I noticed two days ago that one of them, Venus, has a hard...
I've tried hanging the katuk before, but the ceiling is a bit high for them to reach the sand floor. I might be able to do it with the pigeon plum. Persephone and Venus were hiding among the katuk leaves just fine though.
So, I took an updated photo. I opened up the right side a bit to give Persephone and Venus more room. I also put in a branch of pigeon plum for Jupiter, Athena, and Eris and a couple branches of katuk for Venus and Persephone. The katuk seems to be a bit more springy (I got a young, green branch...
Bit of history: I have five coturnix quail (1 cock, 4 hens) in a hutch that is just short of 10 square feet. Two of the females have yet to lay consistently, while the other two (Athena & Eris) lay daily. One of the hens, Persephone, has laid once, but she had bumblefoot which I treated with...
Day 9 update. I think it's so cute when she's in the tub after treatment. She rustles about and when I quietly poke my nose in to see what she's doing, she freezes and stares at me as if to say "What? I'm not doing anything".
Pics:
I noticed she had a tiny layer of poop caked onto the...
That's fine. It was my decision to try it anyway, and there's nothing to be done about it now. She wasn't the first quail I've lost since starting to care for quail.
Day 8 update: Persephone seems to be doing fine. She's very fussy with the pants and socks I put down for her. I'm not sure if...
Persephone continues to do well. I plan to continue the baths until Thanksgiving at least, just to be thorough and not risk anything.
Phoebe is gone, though. I put her back in the hutch, placing her into the nesting box in hopes she would warm up. Checked on her this morning, and rigor mortis...
Day 7 update. Unfortunately, this didn't work out as planned. The one (Phoebe) I put in there with her (Persephone) was extremely lethargic when I went in there to tend to her. Phoebe was missing some feathers when I first got them, but I didn't think much of it at the time. Maybe it was too...
Understood. When I purchased her, I bought a second quail with her (Phoebe). I put Phoebe in the tub with her this morning. Will report again this evening.
