Is it too cold for 4-wk old chicks to move outside with a heat lamp when night temps are mid 40's??

Update: They are all doing great! They sleep all over the place now. They are 6 weeks old at this point. Still using a heat lamp due to it getting in the low 30's at night now. I plan to winter-proof their coop VERY soon! By noon it's in the 50's/60's, so I let them out in their run when I'm...

Is it too cold for 4-wk old chicks to move outside with a heat lamp when night temps are mid 40's??

Thank you Tamara119! And a BIG thank you Blooie for your wonderful story! I couldn't help but laugh at your 2nd post, you are funny. But that definitely proves how hardy chickens can really be! My chicks are LOVIN their new space. I notice they snuggle up in the corners of the coop and not under...

    What is this chick?!

Wow, it does look like a Blue Andalusian. I googled and looked on images. I even found a picture of them around the same age as mine- looks just like it. They're beautiful birds!

Is it too cold for 4-wk old chicks to move outside with a heat lamp when night temps are mid 40's??

Thanks! I let them in the coop with the heat lamp, which is positioned in the middle. They are so much happier with all the room to play in. They've already located their water and food and have discovered bugs. Thank you all for the advice!

Is it too cold for 4-wk old chicks to move outside with a heat lamp when night temps are mid 40's??

Okay, that is encouraging! I want mine to grow their feathers in faster also. My coop is an 8x6, but with 16 chicks I'm hoping they will keep each other warm. I'm still thinking heat lamp for at least the 1st week or so. I also have 3 older hens in the coop, but we've put up a temporary fence to...

Thank you! I may move them out, but keep them inside the coop with the heat lamp on. At least that way they can have more space.

Is it too cold for 4-wk old chicks to move outside with a heat lamp when night temps are mid 40's??

Thanks Debbie....I'm thinking gradual change too. I don't want to freeze my babies. I just know they are so bored in their brooder.

Is it too cold for 4-wk old chicks to move outside with a heat lamp when night temps are mid 40's??

My chicks are 4 weeks old and sooo ready to get out of their brooder! This is my 2nd batch of chicks, but my 1st time raising them in the Fall. And now that they are ready to go outside, it is suddenly getting chilly in Georgia. So, I'm thinking of possibly using their heat lamp in their grown...

    What is this chick?!

Thank you everyone! I ordered from Murray McMurray and I had the option to add a free "exotic chick" to the batch. My batch included EE's, Black Australorps, and a Buff Orpington roo. So maybe it's a Blue Orpington. I'll have to look up Blue Andalusion, I don't think I've ever heard of that. I...

    New Chicks

I just got a batch of chicks last week. It's fine to order now! (I live in GA too!) I got mine from Murray McMurray and they are fantastic! This is my 2nd time ordering from them. They are very helpful if you have any questions online and over the phone. Very nice. You could get a batch of...

    What is this chick?!

I have a new batch of chicks and I got one "free chick" that is a mystery to me. I believe it's a roo, but clueless to what kind of breed it is. Can anyone help me or is it just too soon to tell? Thanks!

Hello all! I'm new on here today.

Thank you. I only wanted docile chickens due to my youngest child is scared of them.
