Meat bird tractor as the garden winds down....help

I was trying to work backwards from processing till when I should get some. Is that the best way to figure out when to order chicks? Good to know about them tolerating cooler temperatures. I was afraid with their less than fully feathered selves I'd be running a lamp out more nights than...

Meat bird tractor as the garden winds down....help

I was hoping I could get some advise for next year. As my garden winds down I was thinking of placing a tractor of meat birds that I'd move around the garden to put some manure directly on the garden for next year. My garden is 50'x75' and with an 8'x8' tractor I was hoping to run a batch of...

Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Anybody have any extra birds, doesn't matter if they are cockrels, old hens bantam or full size. Any breeds or combinations are fine. Training a young Lab for duck hunting. Looking to get some birds for him to pick up. I had some ducks that I kept but since the freezer just went kaput and I...

    Disappointing Turkey

I think its more about the speed of the processors than the method used to process them that will play into it. The processors are going to make their $ by volume so the faster they work the more birds they can get done. Decapitating would go MUCH faster than electricity. Plus it would be...

Suggest a dual purpose meat bird and why.

I think it depends on what your needs are. I think you could easily breed for a meatier dual purpose bird like a Rock, or NH, Cornish, Buckeye, etc by focusing on that aspect of the breed. Then if you only need a few more eggs to keep your family fed why not just toss in a couple of hens that...

Is this rooster good for baking?

Quote: Id add in some sprigs of rosemary and thyme also in the cavity but thats just me. Rest of it sounds excellent. Very cool idea of using both foil and the lid. Always learning something on here.

    Thanksgiving Turkey Processing

Quote: Who else is coming for Thanksgiving dinner? Would they eat a heritage bird? Im not saying give them a live bird either. Sorry just reread my post and thought I should edit that. Maybe give them away as Christmas gifts? Float the idea out there since you'd have so many culls...

    Thanksgiving Turkey Processing

Id get that bird in a cooler of ice asap and let it rest as long as you can before you have to cook it. Even then if your cooking with an internal thermometer maybe you lower the oven temp a bit so it takes longer to get up to the safe to serve temperature. Just a thought

    Salatin Pastured Poultry-type pen QUESTIONS-

Another option to ensure you have water tight seals is to use some aquarium sealant. Its a silicone that's safe for living animals, dries fast and is inexpensive to use. Id run a bead of that around both sides of the tubing coming out from the buckets just to be safe but thats just me. Nice...

    Michigan

I hear ya on the coon situation, my father in law and his brother between them (their properties join up) have dispatched over 20 of the bandits. And neither of them have poultry. That's just from the small dish of cat food they have out and sweet corn in the garden. Its unreal!!! I'm glad I...

How may I use narrow space between fences?

Run the weed wacker and mower through there. Then as Oregon Blues mentioned get some weed block and roll it out along there. That will get rid of the weeds. Id look at doing snow peas, then when those are slowing down, put in some pole beans like Kentucky Wonders and go and pick them all...
