Thoughts on converting a corner of this shed.

Definitely put in vents and a window get air flow. In the winter when they are closed up, the chickens produce a lot of humidity, and if it is cold, they could get frost bite on their feet and comb. I had that happen to my rooster--his comb turned black and I had to put stuff on it every day...

So do I REALLY need a walk-in coop?

Hi, I have had a home made chicken coop for over 30 years and it's about 7-8 feet high. It's great to be able to go in and clean, and collect eggs. Build your coop and run as big as you can--I have 24 chickens right now, not counting the babies that will join when they are grown, and I have had...

Official BYC Poll: Are Chickens Easier or Harder To Raise Than Dogs/Cats?

I interpreted the word 'raising' to mean from babyhood to adulthood, not the daily maintenance required for an adult flock.

Official BYC Poll: Are Chickens Easier or Harder To Raise Than Dogs/Cats?

If you have a hen volunteering to be the mother, then there is hardly any work at all! She keeps them warm, so no need for a heat lamp, and she teaches them what they need to know.

Is high quality feed worth the money?

How do you grow your own food? I have 26 chickens and am always interested in how to feed better. I also give supplements: Garlic and vinegar in their water, black oil sunflower seeds, and oatmeal and red pepper flakes when it's cold.

Sand litter users - this thread is for you

I use shavings in the nest boxes. I also have trays (like the ones you put in the bottom of dog crates) underneath the roosts. I can easily clean every day for about 20 minutes. I have 26 chickens in an 8x12 coop.. So many poops! I can't believe I only cleaned once a week when I used...

How much do your birds eat?

That sounds okay. I have 38 chickens and I use a 40-lb bag of pellets a week plus scratch grains, black oil sunflower seeds, and oatmeal (to keep them warm when it's cold). I use Grandpas's feeders and they are great for eliminating waste and keeping other critters from eating the feed.

Has anyone considered the fact that chickens can have mites and bring them into your house? They can also carry disease like salmonella?

    Newbie Egg Questions

I stopped giving my chickens their eggshells after reading that there is bacteria on the shells that the chickens should not ingest. I don't wash my eggs and I put them in the fridge. I sell them and haven't had any complaints.

    cobwebs in the coop

Is it good or bad to have cobwebs hanging from the ceiling of the coop? I like to keep my coop neat and clean and would get rid of them if they are not doing any good. I have 32 chickens and clean the coop and nesting boxes and spray it down once a week.
