    Silkies rescued, sickly, and weak.

Things have changed. One of my retired friends (who used to have a few chickens, but none now) agreed to take the chicks to her home so she could care for them. I'll be checking on them, but won't be visiting until she thinks it is safe to do so. Thank you all for your advice and support.

    Silkies rescued, sickly, and weak.

They don't seem to be doing any better. Eyes are still swollen shut, but no nasel discharge. Although I am keeping them very far away from my older chickens, I can't help but think I may be endangering their health. This is very scary.

    Silkies rescued, sickly, and weak.

I think the only things swollen are their eyes. (The previous owner told me it was from mosquito bites??) She also told me that they were only a couple of weeks old, but I think they are more like 6-8 weeks old. I purchased the Permethrin 10, Tylan 50, and the Ivomec. Not sure what to do...

    Silkies rescued, sickly, and weak.

This morning all their eyes are swollen shut. They aren't sneezing, nor do they have any discharge from nose or mouth. Could it still be respiratory infection? Upon closer inspection, I think they've also got lice. Will the poultry dust take care of lice too? As suggested, I don't want to...

    Silkies rescued, sickly, and weak.

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I had some poultry dust, so that is taken is taken care of. I'll get some worming med tomorrow and pick up some antibiotic. They've been eating nonstop, so I'm guessing that they weren't feed very well before. My plan is to keep them in isolation for at...

    Silkies rescued, sickly, and weak.

I just rescued three Silkies from a filthy farmer's market. (Ididn't need any more chickens, but I couldn't leave them in that condition). All three have swollen and oozing eyes, they've lost most of their feathers on their neck and heads, and the feathers they do have are dull and matted...

    my pet chicken reviews

I think you made great choices! I have two Easter Eggers, two Golden Buffs, and two Australorps. My Golden Buffs lay a beautiful, extra large brown egg everyday. The Easter Eggers lay about 4 times a weeks--small light green eggs. Cute, but small. My Astralorps are still a little young yet...

    Cold weather treat suggestions....

When sunflower seeds are mentioned, do you mean the shelled kind? Or, is it okay to give them the kind I buy for the wild birds with the shells still on?

    my pet chicken reviews

I noticed you live in Plant City, FL. There is a great farm/ranch in Tampa that is inspected by the USDA that has really nice chicks. They are called Anvil Acres and you can find their contact number on Craigslist-Tampa. Or let me know and I'll send you their email address. Good luck!

    my pet chicken reviews

I know this is an old thread but I have to add my experience. I ordered 6 chicks from MPC last year. I ordered 3 Easter Eggers and 3 Red Star (sex link) chickens. One of the EEs was DOA and the other two turned out to be Bantam size (I ordered all standard size.) Believe or not, one of the...

Comment by 'jha31452' in article 'Coop Built On A Budget'

I am so new to this that I didn't realize the dangers when I planned and had my husband build the coop. We are definitely adding hardware cloth this weekend. Thank you!

    Coop Built On A Budget

Describe 'Coop built on a budget!' here We built our coop for less than $100 (not counting the automatic waterer, feeder, or Rooster flag!) The most expensive items were the wire $30 at Tractor Supply (I wish I had gone for the more expensive kind) and the hinges $18 at Lowes. We used 8...

Thank you for the info. I'll look up more on LBs!

Yellow with black spot. What breed?

The "extra chick" in my shipment is a small yellow with one black spot on the top on her head. She also has feathers/fuzz on her legs. Any idea what breed she might be?

Sex Link hen is a Rooster!

Keep in mind that these are my first chickens, ever...... All the little chicks looked similar--cream and red; but this one was almost all cream. Had I been a little more knowledgeable (and more experienced), I might have realized immediately that there was a mistake. But now I've...
