    Glassing Eggs (first timer)

Recently started glassing my eggs. Yesterday I noticed an egg apparently got cracked and leaked out. From what I have read so far the batch is ruined. Can I still safely eat the other eggs if they are only a few days old? Another jar has what looks like maybe mold is on too of the water. I...

    Roosting Jersey Giant

The roosts are 3’ high, 5’ high, and 7’ high. The lowest roost is about the same height as the nests. The structure is repurposed that is why the nests are as high as they are.

    Roosting Jersey Giant

Roost made of 2x4 (some flat and some on edge). All are 12” from wall. Highest roost is 12” from ceiling. Recent roost test addition is 2x4 on edge 12” from ceiling resulting in most of the flock moving from the lower flat roosts to the higher edge roosts believe it or not. Spacing on the...

    Roosting Jersey Giant

My Jersey Giant hens are not getting the point to roost on the bars in the coop. I have various roost heights. Plenty of roosting space. These are the first JG I have had so I am learning about that breed still. They keep roosting in my nests. I had blocked the nests off for weeks and they still...

    Injured, possible broken leg?

The photo doesn’t quite give it justice, and I am unable to upload a video on the forum, but I came home this morning to find one of my pullets, nine weeks old, appearing to have a broke leg. She can stand and move, but the left leg looks to be very weak Yesterday she was fine and she appears to...

    Removing Mama Hen from babies.

How would you deal with the differing feed issue? Chick getting starter/grower and the other laying hens getting layer feed. Does it really matter much if the chicks get the extra calcium? Cost wise it would be the same $17/50lbs whether the 22% layer or the 18% starter. To add, I have two...

    Removing Mama Hen from babies.

She does not seem to be clucking as she was at the chicks. But does snuggle with them still at night though they all are so big they cant all fit under her haha. She tries though.

    Removing Mama Hen from babies.

In the coop to the left of the photo, I have eight week old babies along with mama. When they start laying, I plan on integrating them with my existing flock. My question is at what point do I remove mama from the babies because mama is from my in-laws flock as she was broody and hatched our 12...

    Help needed! Multiple chicken issues…

So i was able to get fluid off the belly. Only did 20cc to prevent shock. Going to do more when I get off work. The belly is very soft/squishy. The fluid i drained was cloudy yellow/green. After the drain and crop massage and drain she stayed put in the isolation coop all night. This morning she...

    Help needed! Multiple chicken issues…

Suggestions needed. Found my chicken out in the yard. Not really eating or drinking. Lethargic not moving around much. Found the abdomen to be swollen and figured it was water belly or egg bound. Check the vent there’s no egg I’ve dealt with water belly before drained everything with no issue...

Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

I want to get a Jersey Giant hen. I currently have Plymouth Partridge Rock, Ameraucanas (including 2 roos), and some Reds. Would there be any issues with integrating them all? Think my roos would try to jump the JG?

    Leave them or separate?

Our 11 week old pullets have now showed us we have two roos. This morning I noticed we do have lots of feathers in the coop but idk yet if it is from fighting or not. The feathers don’t match the two Americana roos so they seem to either be either picking their girls, the Plymouth Rocks are...

    22% protein until 18 weeks?

Along these lines, I started feeding my chicks the first bag pictured. After their first 5 weeks we need more feed. I currently use the Layer 22 for my hens. Can I use the Layer 22 for the pullets or need to stick with the starter/grower?

    Suggestions and critiques

Thank you for the feedback. It is 1/4" not 1/2" hardware cloth if thats any better. Suppose I should just add pine shavings to protect their feet?
