That egg looks a lot like my polish egg. I was told they lay white eggs, but mine is more cream color. It is also smaller than all my other large fowl eggs.
Final update is that she still hangs out near the brooder during the day and still shows no aggression towards the chicks. I took off the roof so she could go in and out, but she is still roosting with the other chickens at night... Therefore, her adopting them is a no go... My new theory is...
I put her in with them and she was happy for about three minutes.... The chicks all ran to greet her and she checked them over... Then the chicks started pecking at her wattles and fro.... Then she couldn't get out of the chicken tractor fast enough! I totally wasn't expecting her to be the...
Hi All... I got five day-old chicks two weeks ago.... Our barn where I normally brood chicks was full of hay so I didn't want a heat lamp in there, so I moved a chicken tractor into our chicken coop to brood the chicks there.... Now one of my hens won't leave the coop and has quit laying...
Here is a picture of the "Little Dear"... I had to send her to chicken jail again because she was acting aggressive towards me while taking the pic... And I had just thrown her some scratch which she ignored.... She was also free ranging so shouldn't have been too protective of "her space"...
:( Our almost 20 week bantam cochin has gone from being a lap chicken to attack chicken in a week... She was so lovely and sweet and would crawl in my lap a couple weeks ago. She now puffs up and attacks me (or my 2 year old daughter) whenever we go in the coop or the enclosure. I don't know...
I know the revenue is much appreciated, but don't forget about your local food bank for donations... I send those that are getting to be a couple weeks old and haven't sold. They don't require that they come in egg cartons here, so I just box (whatever I have laying around) with a couple paper...
I have thought that this bird was a hen since it was 8 weeks old, but since the last molt, am starting to have doubts. It doesn't have a crazy hairdo like my obvious male of the same age/coloration, but it doesn't have the refined do of my female polish... Can you help?
Ignore the obvious...
Somebody decided he needed his voice heard..., but whenever I am around decides he better keep his trap shut! I think I know who it is (Culprit 1), but am new to this so am having trouble knowing who my gals are. Can you help me sex these chickens? My nephew (after 7 years of 4-H chickens)...
These were supposedly sexed as pullets when I got them (day old at the feed store)... Now, at 4 wks, I think the 1st one might be a roo because of the larger comb, late feathering and thicker legs... especially compared to the three others which look like the second pic... What do you think...
For all of you who want closure... we tried the free range thing.... for two weeks... We had a variety of adventures such as the birds running away from home (1/4 mile down the road) and pooping all the time on our front door mat (apparently they did not figure out how to ring the door bell)...
I am the one who probably risked the bio security because mine are some of my nephews 4h chickens that we decided to bring home after fair to live happy lives ( instead of butchering). Neighbors raised theirs from feed store hatchlings.
Thanks! I will talk with my neighbors... Having their chickens come visit has never bothered me and my 2-yr-old daughter loves chasing them back to their home. I guess I will figure out how to clip their wings...
Thanks for the idea about throwing mulch down... I put some grass clippings...
