That excerpt w/ the description of the cooked egg and the overproduction of follicles - was that what the collection of egg yolk like globds of varying size was in one of my last pictures? It almost exactly describes my findings. I feel just terrible.
Sorry. I took a ton of pictures. I’ve never looked inside of a chicken before, but so much of what I found seemed wrong. She must have been sick for a long time and I just feel terribly for her. ☹
Once I got into the mesentary and the intestine, everything was covered with tiny nodules, which didn’t seem normal. Al of the connective tissue just seemed hardened and calcified, and covered in bumps...
Her belly was full of tons of this thick yellow liquid and globs of cooked egg like chunks throughout the entire peritoneum.
The yellow thing in the first picture was hard and bumpy, there seemed to be a tube inside, there were also several (what I think were )soft egg shells
One of the first things that happened once I dissected through the viscera containing what I assume was the peritoneum, cloudy yellow fluid and eggs parts spilled everywhere, along with a perfect yellow
yolk.
Vent appearance :
This was hard and bumpy...
This was a 3.5 year old Buff Orpington/ Easter Egger mix. I hatched her and several others in an incubator. She was always healthy, one of the tops of the pecking order......She was a big chicken, about 5.5 pounds when she died. I recently treated the whole flock for coccidiosis and dewormed...
When I first started keeping chickens about 5 years ago, we fed layer feed, not necearily any one particular brand, either from the local feed store or Orschelns, and kitchen scraps, daily. They would occasionally get meal worms and occasionally scratch grain. When I discovered the ascites in a...
Thanks for posting this. I’m going to be inspecting my girls feet from now on. I can’t believe how bad they were, and also how sick she was. I just feel ill about it all.
I know! They’re so young! I’ve stopped giving all treats and kitchen scraps Bc I don’t know what else to change, but I’ve put down like 3 birds in a year, all who had to have their bellies tapped every few weeks/monthly. I thought that was what was going on with this one, but I was wrong. I just...
I’d like to post some photos on here .... they are of my 3 yr old hen who I ended up euthanizing tonight after suspecting she was suffering. I did a necropsy and I think I made the right decision. Is anyone willing to help interpret these pics?? I took pictures all along the way, both for my own...
Here’s what they looked like. They were BAD. Sadly I found that her ascites were actually what I believe to be egg yolk peritonitis and so we euthanized her. I actually decided to necropsy her so that someone might be able to weigh in on was going on....
So I’ve had 3 other hens in the last few years that developed ascites during their (short) lifetimes, and have successfully tapped their abdomens for comfort.eventually they either died or were culled. I’ve drained this ones’ belly once before, maybe a few months ago, but she has blown back up...
So you think the nipple waterer neck mess is causing them to be hyper vigilant with each other’s wet feathers? This really all started when we switched systems. I noticed them pecking at one another’s necks when wet from drinking.
And what about the dryness and almost swelling around some of...
I feel like I’ve been dealing with one issue after another with my flock in the last few months, and am currently finishing (and maybe restarting) treatment for coccidiosis and assorted worms.
I have a mixed age flock, including 17 8-10 wk chicks that seemed to have coccidiosis and I think...
They have a chicken “yard”, which is fenced at about 40x30?, so not free ranging right now....
And dang, about the Corid. So I did the 5 days at full strength, but didn’t know I needed to do 1/4 for 2 weeks! Should I restart the 5 days?
