I know this is a very old post, but hoping you might solve a mystery. My very large cochin was found dead in the yard with neck injuries. A coyote would have taken the whole animal. Could this chicken have been too large for a hawk to fly off with? Thanks.

Our beloved 5 year old buff acted a bit confused on Wednesday (couldn't remember how to get in the coop), by Thursday a.m., couldn't stand at all.
Brought her indoors - still had a good appetite, but couldn't drink laying down...
Thanks for your kind thoughts. Wish I had read more of these forums before building our coop, but didn't even know we had those varmints here - hoping to warn other chicken owners in Colorado!
Just for the record, whatever got into my coop probably had to climb UP the turret and through the larger fencing at top. Everything else is doubled up six ways to Sunday (we also have 2 rabbits - untouched - that have not escaped this enclosure). Dead hens found just behind upper red door.
