It could also be an allergy to something. I've had a few chicks over the years display this also. One time I took the vitamin mix out of the water and saw improvement. I've concluded if it's not a deficiency or reaction, it's crazy chick syndrome.

I don't think it is hawks or owls. They aren't head rippers. They start tearing at the body.
I think it's a small four legged predator. I think skunks attack the head also. I had a rooster once whose head was bitten by what I believe a skunk (the smell was in the area the day before). He...
Well, Save a Chick doesn't have the vitamins that she would need. I would look for a more complete vitamin mix without the added salt. Or try the drop of Vit E oil from the people vitamin aisle.
Avian Super Pack is a good choice for birds and it doesn't have salt as first ingredient. Would...
If there is a lot of sawdust in your shavings you need to make sure the chicks have chick grit. Just put a few small piles in their brooder once a week. They will eat that sawdust and they could get plugged up somewhere along that disgestive tract if they eat too much and don't have grit...
Is the brooder outside? I would be surprised if it was IB unless the chicks are exposed outside to other chickens.
I think I have read there is some disease cats can transmit to chickens, but I don't think it was respiratory. Had more to do with mice and diseases they carry. Personally, I...
If it doesn't look as bad as the picture, and doesn't look infected, just continue to monitor. There may be some infection in there that needs cleaning out. If it doesnt look like it is getting better in a week, I would start some penicillin injections in a week. You can get that at feed...
