    Best pre-made coop?

I've also just ordered a pre-made coop. I'm only intending to use it to introduce my babies to the great outdoors and to get them used to putting themselves to bed. Once they get the idea I'll open the doors and let them free range with my existing flock and hopefully decide to move in with...

Electric Hens - Am I burning my chicks?

I thought exactly the same when I first used my electric brooder. It felt so hot I wrapped kitchen towel around it to stop it burning my chicks. Went to bed...in the morning all my chicks were gone! My first thought was that somehow the cat had got in and had them. I picked up the brooder to...

Please give me the benefit of your experience

The blob has detached from the chick. Looks like there's no blood in it. It looks like a glob of yolk - the chick is moving around well and looks strong so I'll keep my fingers crossed and leave her alone to rest and dry up

It seems as if there's yolk there attached though. It was a natural hatch with no intervention. In the photo it's kind of sitting on the yolk which is attached by a mucous string. I'm an over anxious mum at the best of times.

I hadn't considered weaning the 3 week olds away from the heat. Should I be doing that already?

Advice on mixing chicks of different ages needed plese

I have 3 silkie chicks that are 3 weeks old and 3 that are 8 days old. I really need them to all be in the same brooder. Can anyone give me advice on how to make this happen smoothly. The are alongside each other and have had a good look at each other. I'm just concerned that the big hooligans...

    Is 100% prevention possible?

I use a steam wallpaper stripper in my henhouse once a year. Concentrate on the nooks and crannies. The boiling steam kills all the red mites and eggs if there are any but you're using no chemicals at all. Then make up a sludgy mud pie mix with DE and a little water and paint it all over the...

Incubator Fail - Don't give up!

I'm sorry this is a long first post but I thought this might give hope to anyone who has an incubator disaster mid time. My little incubator started fluctuating temperature in the night at day 8. Having thought the problem was solved in the morning of day 9 I went to work . I got a panicked...

    Hello from Kent

Hello, I'm new here but have gained a wealth of knowledge from you all. I have a little flock of 6 old ladies, 5 pekin bantams and a white silkie. I hatched them in my kitchen about 8 years ago. There were more but I've recently lost a few...due to old age I expect. I've also homed 3 lots of ex...
