I have several hens with no tail feathers or fluff. It is like the tail feathers were cut off. Has anyone ever seen this before or know why this is?

We've had one pip (if that means cracked shell) and we can hear chirping. I am happy! Thanks for your help. I am going to add sponges - the humidity is at 60%.

I candled them on Saturday, when I took out the egg turner. But I have never done this before, so I did not know what I was looking at. I just knew enough to take out the empty ones. Should they be pipping by now, or when would you think that might happen? This is in a 3rd grade class of 30...

I have a large box that I plan to use as a brooder for about 30 newly hatched chicks. I have a heat lamp, red, 250 watt, with a hanger. How can I make a stand to suspend the lamp over the box?

I am even more nervous to say that I am using a Little Giant circulated air incubator with an egg turner. It does not seem to work well for lots of people (from what I have read). It has maintained it's temp just fine for us so far. But we still have a week to go!

I started my 45 brown eggs on 2/12/08 at noon. I just went to check them and I could not see much. The room was too light for one thing. All I really noticed was that some (most) of the yolks seemed darker than others. Is that any indication of growth? I could not see any veins.

What about candling? Should I do that and if so, when?
