One of my hens laid the tiniest egg today and very dark brown. What causes that? It was about the size of a quail egg.

How do I know if they are fertile or not? And is it ok to write dates on the eggs?

So, can and/or should you take non-broody hen's eggs and place them with another hen to be hatched and raised?

Let me add that I live in coastal NC. Between June and September I wouldn't think you'd have to worry about heat lamps. If they don't die of heat and humidity I'll be impressed.
