    New chicks in South Mississippi!

I still have to put some finishing touches on it. He had already built 4 coops and one 24x16 combined breeding/grow out pens. so, I'm not going to ask him to build anything anytime soon. I will make due with what we have.

    New chicks in South Mississippi!

I understand about husbands. Mine does most of the building with some assistance from me. I told him I was going to build a Silkie pen and he said he would cut the wood for me, but I would have to do everything else: the measuring, hammering, etc. He ended up having to help me do some of the...

    Ancona Ducks

Nothing for sale at this time. I just got these the end of April. I haven't started incubating any of their eggs, yet. I'd love to breed with one of your ducks.

    free range egg prices

I sell mine for $3 a dozen mixed (med/lg/xlg) and going to $3,50 on june 1st. most people who buy mine are through a co-op who also buy organic. my son tells me I am selling for too little as he pays $6 a dozen in Pensacola, an hour and a half away, and his family goes through about 7 dozen a week.

4 days outside, will they learn to go in coop on their own?

we do the same thing JWilson does. Anytime we put out any new birds in the yard. we put them in their designated coop with food & water for about 4 days. On the 5th day we let them out to free range (no runs here). If they do not return to roost, we find them, put them back in for two more...

How often can I candle chicken eggs?

There are several schools of thought. Personally, after several failed attempts at a good hatch rate I stumbled upon an article on dry hatching. I also discussed at length with a member in a local group his own experiences on how he came to dry hatching. Basically they both went to the master...

    Ancona Ducks

New to Anconas as well. Trying to find local breeders in So Miss is rather difficult. I was fortunate to find this quintet and am absolutely in love with them.

    Ducks/Mating/Laying eggs

Pekin drakes can be very aggressive. However, there is a hormone shot/implant your vet can get that will slow him down.

    New chicks in South Mississippi!

Kerusnak, welcome to BYC. I am on the coast as well. Ocean Springs. I love Fazzio's! They have the best chicks in there. There are also several FB pages for backyard chickens in Mississippi if/when you start looking for local chickens or to improve your chicken math

    New chicks in South Mississippi!

Chicapee, If this is your first time hatching, be patient. with lower temps your chicks can take up to 25 days to fully develop.
