    GOOD dog story

Thought you might enjoy a story about a responsible dog owner/neighbor. Our coop/run is in our garden enclosed by a chain link fence. Last week, one of the girls ventured under the gate, and wandered onto the road between our houses. Our neighbors have a black lab that they walk off-leash all...

Do free ranging birds need more calcium?

    Thanks! I appreciate the help.

Do free ranging birds need more calcium?

My girls free range about 6 hours/day. They always have access to their layer feed, but consumption has gone down since they found the joys of grass and bugs. Lately, it seems like their shells are a little weaker. Do they need calcium to offset the free range diet change? Thanks!

Wire mesh on Coop Run floor to keep out nasty chicken eaters?

I dug about 8-10 inches of soil out of the run and totally encased it with hardware cloth. Then put the dirt back in. The hens haven't been bothered at all, and we consider the run predator proof. We don't even have a door between the run and the coop - just an open doorway. We don't have to...

How do YOU store your chicken feed???

We keep ours in the original bags inside galvanized steel trash cans with bungee(sp?) cords through the lids & handles to keep out the critters. By keeping the original bags, we don't get that 'smudge' in the cans that needs to be cleaned out.

Can your chickens eat butternut/acorn squash?

I have an overload of squash from last year. Is this good eating for the chooks? Do you remove the seeds & skins? All help appreciated. Thanks.

    Another coop flooring quandry...

We originally put a hardware cloth floor in the coop, but now have a cheap remnant piece of vinyl flooring over it. It allows us to use the deep litter method, and when it's time to clean, we just lift out the flooring and pour it into the compost pile. The chickens have good footing with...

    a WWYD winter in CA

I agree with LynneP. I just make sure they are out of the wind and the coop stays dry. Mine haven't had any problems with the frost we've been getting, and the coop has hardware cloth ventilation along the top of 2 sides. The roof hangs over far enough to keep the rain out.

    Flooring advice needed

I use a vinyl flooring remnant I found at Home Depot and put DE and a layer of pine shavings on top so it's not slippery. I did not attach the flooring so I can just pick it up (with all the shavings & poo) & dump everything right into the compost heap every so often. Works great.

    Flying with eggs?

Both my dad & son have flown with our eggs. We tore the top off an egg carton & wrapped the bottom of the carton & the eggs in bubble wrap. That way the screeners could see what they were and they were secure. Went into the overhead for the flight & no breakage or trouble. Hope this helps...

Bedding for Nesting Boxes... Should I Double Up?

I like that idea of using plastic grass under the pine shavings! That will make it so much easier to lift out the old bedding & clean the boxes. Good thinking:clap

Are dirty feathers Just dirty feathers?

I have the same problem with my Boff Orp. I assumed it was mites/lice of some sort & dusted all 7 pullets with some meds (forget the name) 3 weeks in a row. Disinfected the coop, the whole 9 yards. Those tail feathers still have the dark spots. None of the other girls have them & I'm...
