I have a different problem that I need an answer to before I give away one of my hens. I have no rooster, and not nearly enough room for a hen to raise chicks. So I of course have a hen that has gone broody every month for the last several months. So for at least 2 weeks of the month she does...
I need some advice. My BO has gone broody for the 4th time this spring. I am an urban chicken keeper, and don't have room for more, nor do I have a place for her to brood where the chicks would be safe from the other 3 hens. I was thinking of getting some fertile eggs and letting her brood...
I have been using mine for nearly a year. I have a 5 gallon cooler for 4 hens. the only thing was that the reds were not very bright about it, I had to actually hold their beaks up to the nipples for a couple of minutes before they finally realized the water came from "up" not "down" when it...
My four girls have not eaten but about half of their regular ration of ff the last week or better. If that. I have been reducing the amount as they have been leaving so much. They normally eat about 1/2 C per day, plus scraps if I have them, but that's not a lot. The last 3 days I have totally...
I do know that the color of the egg under the brown is white (color me surprised when I hardboiled some eggs and the brown washed off the eggs), and the spatters are definitely blue. Just a mystery, and it has only happened once. So far.
As you can see, this appears "blown" on, not a contact color transfer. It is the same coloring as the blue egg next to it. I am at a loss as to how this happened.
I have 4 hens, 2 EE's, a BO and a RIR. The other day I went out to collect eggs, and found one I cannot explain. The RIR lays darker brown eggs, one of my EE's lays blue eggs. On the end of the RIR's egg, there are BLUE splatters, quite a lot actually. I am at a loss as to how this could occur...
We were in Costco Thursday and they had organic chicken feed. I was shocked. Anyway, it was I think $19.00 for 40 lbs, not 50. So check your local Costco. We have to drive over an hour and a half to get to our "local" one.
I put my broody hen in a separate pen where she could still see her flock mates. It was a shady area so a little cooler than the area she is used to. That evening I put her in the secure area where the roosting coop is. It is closed off from the run (where the nest boxes are) at night. The first...
Thank you for your advise. This is what I did. I made a separate pen outside of the coop/run area where she could still see her coop mates. It was completely shaded. That evening late I put her in the secure area with the roosting coop and no access to the nest boxes. She paced around but...
My set up is such that they go into a secure area and up into their roosting coop at night, and during the day they have access to that area and the run where the nest boxes are. I went out this morning and my BO who had been showing signs of going broody was in a nest box. I tossed her out, but...
Since we are near a lake the soil is sandy naturally and drains well (when it's not pouring at least). When I water the yard 2 hours later the soil is pretty dry in the summer. I would have to amend the run with topsoil maybe. We are not humid here, maybe a few days in the summer, but mostly...
