    Cochin hen aggression

Kind of what I was thinking but it's only our first full year of having a flock and thought I'd search out opinions from those much more wise than us. Appreciate your thoughts. Actually hoping she's going broody as it's so much fun letting them do the hatching and raising for you. We're hooked...

    Cochin hen aggression

Both. She may have been bossy with the others before and I just blew it off because chickens are chickens, but when she puffed up on us and did the wing spread and false charge a couple of times, I was shocked. Never before. The other variable is that I just let our other cochin hatch out 8...

    Cochin hen aggression

She's about a year old and has never shown any signs of ill temper but has in the last week or so. She acts like a broody hen would if she was protecting chicks but that's not the case. She's not lingering in the nesting box anymore than usual. She's eating fine and showing no signs of...

    My little tractor

Just getting started with a backyard flock. A friend of mine gave me 10 and I bought 4 more, I have 14 roosting in this tractor I built, but they free range during the day. They were only 6 weeks old when I got them. Almost 6 months now and 5 are roosters. 4 egger Roos and an RIR. Having...

    Hens per Nest Box

I'm glad I search before I ask questions. I'm new and was wondering how many boxes I really needed for 10 to 15 hens. Clearly more is not better!! I'm thinking 4 boxes would be plenty.

    South Carolina

Ha!! Dang right, let it be known. Most times when I bring this into conversation I get the,"you're so red" comment. Um...no....I'm just making sure you know who I am!

I would be very interested in at least talking with this owner in North Charleston. If said person is OK with it, shoot me a PM. Thank you very much.

    South Carolina

Seems like most of the breeders in SC are in the upstate. Anyone ever dealt with Whitmore Farms? They have a website and have heritage breeds. Seem legit but you never know. They have Welsummers and Americaunas. Much more expensive than efowl and the other hatcheries but it looks as though...

Sure do appreciate it, I'm familiar with the area somewhat. What kind are you raising? Are you enjoying it?

    South Carolina

Thanks a lot! Yeah I'm realizing that about the Ameraucanas and I'm fine with the Easter eggers...really just want the egg coloring and most reviews I've read have said they are a very calm "breed" and good to have around. I'm actually leaning toward the Welsummer over the Maran after some...

    South Carolina

Getting ready to start my first flock of chickens, mainly for egg production to start, but as I've been doing research I've found myself immersed in the chicken world! Really think I'm going to enjoy this. I'm leaning toward a mixed flock of Buff Orpington, Cuckoo Maran, and Ameraucanas. All...
