We use both, and bale both on our own land (in KS). Vastly prefer rounds or mid-squares, even when we only had 2 horses at home. Bigger bales are consistently a better deal when you consider price per ton.
It is a common misconception that rounds/large squares (>600lb) are "bad" hay. In fact...
Horse vans are more common in the US than most think, but they do seem to be primarily on the East Coast. If you buy new, expect to shell out $150k+ (we looked at one that was $500k!) but you can find used ones for super cheap, even as low as a few thousand dollars. This is the company that...
I agree completely with this.
As a parent, I need to see the commitment to the "project" first, BEFORE I sink lots of time and money into doing it "better". Start out small and affordable, and you can easily build from there.
Our children started out with 3 young market wethers that we kept...
Since the kids and I have so much time at home right now, and the demand for locally grown meat and eggs is sky high, we decided to purchase 35 chicks and ducklings. The kids are using it as a homeschooling "project" for math, science and biology. We don't have internet to support online...
Just keep in mind while the invisible fence may keep the goat IN it does not keep predators OUT. And I would be curious if the goats respect the invisible fence when they are in "panic" mode. I am afraid they will just blow right past it, shocks or not. My herd will bounce off pipe panels and...
What did you deworm her with? What amount? How long ago? Is she in a herd? Grazing or drylot? Is she fed hay off the ground?
All those questions are aimed at the possibility of her carrying a parasite load.... internal parasites can be a bugger with goats, and reinfection is a HUGE issue.
At 5 weeks old they are plenty acclimated to the environment to have some outdoor time. I would not turn them loose on several acres quite yet, but they would definitely enjoy and benefit from some turnout in a small lot, maybe half and acre or so.
I would make sure they have access to shelter...
I have used electric fencing with horses for over 40 years, including Premier1 electric netting in recent years. Never an issue, but like others have said, my horses know and respect electric fencing (even when it is off!). I certainly would not throw a horse that was new to electric fence into...
I have:
13 horses: Rascal, Oran, Lady, Ben, Lily, Petey, Chili, Spirit, Bodie, Oscar, Barbie, Bonnie and George. I own the first 4 on the list, and take care of the other 9.
1 cow: Momma
1 donkey: Biscuit
12 goats: Pickles, Bubba, Cayenne, Gunner, Sunshine, Rainey, Honey, Wilbur, Syrup...
Um... the 4-6 mths is hogwash. We typically put a whole steer in the freezer every 2 YEARS, and you cannot tell the difference between a 2 yr old vacuum sealed steak and a fresh one.
Dexters are good SMALL cattle, moreso the "beef" lines, not so much the "dairy" lines. We used to breed...
Using electrified poultry netting, like Premier1 or FarmTek sells, would be MUCH easier.
Traditional welded wire is not meant to be electrified. You would have to figure out how to mount it so that it is insulated from the posts AND not touching the ground anywhere. Also, it has too many wires...
I wouldn't give it IM, either.
Very very rarely do we ever give IM injections to our food production animals. Even with the slaughter withdrawal period, the muscle you inject into can be "damaged" and has to be discarded at slaughter. ***MOST*** antibiotics and other meds are absolutely okay to...
He likely has some QH in him, but every horse is not a result of a purebred breeding a purebred. He might be a "mutt" for several generations back... Heinz57 horses are often referred to as Grade on any paperwork (Coggins, HC, etc.). He is a sorrel, which is a color.
I do not get the feeling...
My husband's family kept a herd of about 100 Polled Herefords for 5 generations before selling them off in 2009. My side of the family has likewise kept a herd for 5 generations, though ours was mixed breeds, lots of baldies. Both families were cow/calf operations.
Over the years, I have had...
