    Rooster behavior....please explain!

Thanks Azygous, for the info. My Ameruacana roo (who we're trying to find a new home since we live in the city) has been doing the same thing with my 5-year-old son (but not me; we've had all of them since they were day-old chicks, so all my girls and Aki the roo know who's Mama Bird around...

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Naw, It's more like chickens are Doctor Who's TARDIS--they're bigger on the inside.

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Showed this to my hubby and son.... they said, "It looks like a zombie chicken! brains... ba-gock!"

    Not an Ameruacana

Thanks! Yeah, she sure does look like a Welsummer.... which is interesting, because that was not one of the breeds that were offered at the store where we got her. :-)

    Not an Ameruacana

Here is Buffy. She is about 18 weeks old and is not an Ameruacana. (Comb is all wrong, no "fluffy cheeks.") Any suggestions what she might be and what color eggs we might expect?

    Broody "Hen"

Oh, well then Amber Fluffy Feet is never going to be giving me eggs. She loves being a mama (and has been crazy good at it, too). Our roo, Aki Bocky the Ameruacana, should be able to tell when she's ready to lay, wouldn't he? (He's been leaving her--and our two younger girls--alone... but he...

    Broody "Hen"

So, when do chickens decide that their babies are adults and stop mothering them?

    Broody "Hen"

When my Light Brahma, "Amber Fluffy Feet," was six weeks old, two chickens were killed and we replaced them with day-old chicks. Amber took to them like they were her own. When one chick was killed by a dog, Amber became incredibly protective of "Hammer Slayer" (never let a 5-year-old name your...

    Cats don't lay eggs~right?

Our 7-year-old tom (who is an occasionally -successful birder) likes hanging out with the chickens. Except when Blackie (our white crested black polish) decides she doesn't like having Bono around. She will chase him around the yard, growling and pecking at him. He doesn't fight back (we made...

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I had a chick who wasn't adopted by my Light Brahma (a rare occurrance), so she lived in the house until she was old/big enough to, well, not squeeze under the carport gate, hop up the steps to the door and stand there peeping until we let her in. "Buffy" (a dark brown barred mutt) liked sitting...

    Free range, eggs missing!

I once found a stash of eggs in the open-air compost bin. Another laid her first egg in a dust bath hollow she'd made under one of the lilac bushes. They find some pretty interesting places to lay.

Brahma Bantam Hen Sick - Lethargic and Skinny

I read on another sick chicken thread tonight that pumpkins and squash are good for dealing with worms. The symptoms do sound right for a parasite. Pumpkins and squash are also good in that the little girl gets some nutrients as well. Good luck at the fair!

Got 9, hideous chickens today. What's wrong with them?

The one in front looks like my Zelda, a Rhode Island White. She lays large darker-tan eggs and has a fairly sweet personality (and is taking her current health problems--dog attack this morning--with a stiff upper beak, as your new girls seem to from the pics). They may also be what Dunlap...

    HELP! Zelda's Hurt!

Zelda, our Rhode Island White, was attacked by a neighbor's dachshund this morning and got all her bum feathers pulled out. There are a few puncture wounds as well. She is our best layer (large dark tan eggs) and she is a sweetie and the first to come up when the girls think I have treats. I...

    Large lump on chicken's breast

Thanks so much for this thread! Cindy the Leghorn (who is, believe it or not, at 8 weeks old brooding two infant chicks) all of a sudden got a lump on her right side. Started freaking out there for a minute.
