Two Older Hens need a loving home - HOME FOUND, THANK YOU

We are losing our home and need to find a loving forever home for our two girls. They are sweet and quiet, and very spoiled. They free range in the back yard and are used to lots of treats. Zoey is an easter egger, Little Red is a RR. They have pretty much stopped laying eggs, Zoey will lay...

    Emotional support

Amydanielle -- you're awesome! The world needs more kind hearted folks like you. I agree, if she's happy and healthy, keep doing what you're doing.

    handling chicks

Hold off on the treats until they are older. Everything else sounds fine. Don't handle them too much, maybe once or twice a day. I usually just handled them briefly to take them out of their brooder when it needed cleaning and for food and water changes. It just takes time and patience...

apple cider vinegar wormer for chickens

Can you get Flubenvet in the US? Just had to worm my girls and couldn't locate a US source. We used Zimecterin Gold - needed to treat tapeworm and gapeworm. Hope it does the trick.

Single baby chick, should I buy companions?

It's chick season!! Get at least two more. If you're limited in space, we've found that 3 works well - that way if one is in the nest, the other two have each other to buddy around with. If you have lots of space -- the more the merrier

    water for free range

We only have a small lot, but we place bowls of water where they like to congregate. There is one in the coop/run, one in the middle of the yard by a bird bath and one on the opposite side near a favorite napping spot. They visit all three during the day. We just use ceramic dog dishes - they...

    Keeping Chickens Free Range

Heiditam - I used to rely on family/friends to care for the girls, but found them unreliable. Now I hire a pet sitter to take care of the birds and our two dogs. It's not cheap, but I have peace of mind that everyone is being cared for properly. She arrives around sun up to let the girls out...

Chicks crackling and sick please help!!

Your babies need a vet ... but if that's not possible, there is a thread on feeding/watering board about natural antibiotics. They are claiming good success with oregano and cinnamon. We've been successful with olive leaf extract when our hen had pneumonia.

    Natural Remedies

Just saw a post over on water/feed board that someone has had success with oregano and cinnamon. I agree, a vet would be the safest route, but if not an option. Check out the thread on natural antibiotics.

    Natural Antibiotics

Oregano and cinnamon are very effective - we've also had success with Olive Leaf Extract. This is great info ... perhaps the originator could share this on the disease/cures board. Just noticed a couple posts over there that could really use this info

    Natural Remedies

If a vet is not an option, you might try Olive Leaf Extract. It helped one of our hens that had pneumonia. Antibiotics didn't work so we figured it might be a fungal infection. She was quarantined for a couple of months, until the sneezing completely stopped. We used a dropper and forced a...

Have you ever had a group of chickens that's just smarter than the rest?

We always said Penny (our RIR) was not a chicken, but an alien in a chicken suit! She figured out the dog door and taught the others how to use it too She understood english, obeyed commands when she felt like it, and would carry on conversations with you! Poor thing passed away recently ...
