    Broody jumping ship! Hatching now...

So, All 5 eggs were viable but one couldn't complete the hatching process. Of the remaining 4 chicks, 2 have some kind of injury on their heads - each was hatched under a different hen. POssibly a peck injury, but by the time I saw them, both mamma hens were lovingly raising their two chicks, so...

    Broody jumping ship! Hatching now...

Thanks.....finally the original broody came back to the nest. I decided to split the difference and giver her back a couple of eggs. Now I can test them both out and see how they do. Guess I'll cross my fingers that all's well in the morning, as I'm sure at least two will finish hatching over night.

    Broody jumping ship! Hatching now...

I came home from work today to discover that my eggs, which were being incubated in the coop, are hatching! It's only partway through day 19, so that caught me off guard. The broody who was incubating the eggs was off the eggs when i checked on the flock around 5:45pm. I gave her at least 45...

Sheep and chickens grazing together - chicken feed?

Yes they do. My ewes still have their lambs with them, so they're still in milk ;). Otherwise that would definitely be an exercise in futility.

What type of chicken is this?

Could it be some kind of mix? Buff Orpington X Welsummer? Honestly, no idea. There are many types of chickens.

Sheep and chickens grazing together - chicken feed?

 Yes that is true. But in all seriousness, I am trying to milk one of my sheep but she's not a dairy sheep and her teats are so tiny. Haven't been very successful so far.

    Peahen/Chicken/Turkey questions for a newbie

I haven't raised peafowl but I have done chickens and turkeys so I'll take a stab based on my own experience. Maybe some peafowl owners can chime in. 1. Since I know hens sometimes raise ducks, I would guess that it is possible to get them to raise a peachick, but only a hen who has been...

Sheep and chickens grazing together - chicken feed?

Well, I do want to get a couple of dairy goats eventually. Unless I can figure out how to milk my sheep. That'd be nice since they are so much easier to contain.

Sheep and chickens grazing together - chicken feed?

Not sure whether this goes in the livestock section or the chickens section, but I'll try here. I have a flock of a total of about 19 chickens. Right now they are split into two coops with runs, but I want to move them all into my sheep pasture. However, it dawned on me that I need to be able...

Suggestions please?? One chicken hasn't laid in 9-10 weeks

Could she feeling just slightly broody enough to stop laying and hang out in the box, but not enough to really insist? And she is not molting I assume? Were you doing any lighting in the coops that stopped or decreased suddenly? Could throw the internal clock off. Once my chickens stopped...

    Predator proofing run door

You could bury hardware cloth under the door just like the rest of the run. It can attached to a wooden threshold under the door, just a partly buried board or 4x4 or 2x4. If you level that and make your doorway nice and square you should be able to keep things from squeezing though. Not sure...

    Too Many Broodies!

I wouldn't count on them remembering which nest is which. I'd try to separate them if you can. I've definitely seen chickens keep getting confused and if one doesn't want to cooperate with the musical nests game it will lower your hatch rates. I have no idea about that egg. I haven't seen one...

    Really Stupid Chickens?

Doing what? What makes her stupid? I think natural selection would take care all but the wiliest domestic chickens without human help looking after them.

Hen Leaving Chicks at 3 Weeks?

Are they in with the rest of your flock or separate? I had this problem with some 5 week old chicks. They were basically feathered so heat wasn't a problem, but mom stopped protecting them and in fact was joining in with the others bullying them. They got moved into a separate pen so they can...
