I've been through this already not too long ago for a chicken that had a stuck egg- she ended up getting surgery, she had torsion of the oviduct. I called EVERYWHERE remotely nearby, it was very hard to even find a place that would see chickens here due to avian flu fears, much less treat them...
I know this is controversial.
Deslorelin (Suprelorin) is an implant used in ferrets to stop ovulation. It's been used in avian (including chickens) off label to do the same, which helps in various reproductive system related ailments. We have in the past lost a chicken due to egg yolk...
I'll do that, thanks @Eggcessive
I did a search on the boards and found this change.org petition, though it's from 2022. I signed it and chipped in. Would be great to get this changed. Sigh...
Were you able to get a vet to place the deslorelin implant? My vet won't do it because of the FDA, he said it wasn't legal and he doesn't want to lose his license. How can I get this for my chickens that would benefit from it?
Hey, how did you get your vet to give deslorelin? My vet said he can't do it because of the FDA and he doesn't want to lose his license (understandably). Is there some way to do this legally?
Update: Pepper did in fact backslide taking her off the anti-inflammatories and antibiotic. She started to get diarrhea and dehydrated again and stopped laying, so we put her back on it. She's back to laying eggs. I hope she doesn't have to be on this forever, but..
I think a hormone implant...
Ah, yeah, I actually have one right now I'm getting a bit worried about and have been nursing because you can see the bulge on the top of the foot. I'm very optimistic about your chicken though, glad she's on the mend!!
I agree with @coach723 , if you are just trying to treat the respiratory issue, I would go with just Tylan/Tylosin.
Also, not sure if anyone has mentioned, but do not treat with Fenbendazole while chickens are molting. Their feathers will grow back all weird. We alternate with pyrantel for...
When was the last time she laid? How does her crop feel? It is slow to empty? Is her vent pasted or just diarrhea? Is she dehydrated from the diarrhea? Are you able to get to a vet? She may need fluids, antibiotics, and/or an anti-inflammatory depending on what is wrong.
Hey, just one thing to add to this - do you have access to Meloxicam? I've had mixed results with it. But as an anti-inflammatory, it has helped various chickens with various inflammation issues (esp in the reproductive tract). I have been having the best luck with using it every other day. I...
Are you able to get a hold of Tylosin (Tylan)? It's pretty accessible even without a vet. I would look up dosing for her weight and give to her orally for 30 days. It has very minimal, if any, side effects. It is used for respiratory illness caused by mycoplasma. If that's the issue, it should...
So it's been like 3 weeks. We had gotten to weekly visits to the vet to get extra fluids. We have been giving Pepper extra fluids by tube because she just wasn't drinking enough on her own. Both girls have been on Tylosin once daily, and Meloxicam every other day. The last time I posted was...
