What just eats head / neck?

Thank you, me too! I've scooped up all the bedding in search for a point of entry, but not yet. Ugh. I put a radio in the coop as a deterrent, and the predator didn't come last night, thank heavens.

What just eats head / neck?

Oh my goodness! This is happening to me right now too! Same death, same manner. My coop is fully enclosed in hardware cloth. Therefore, I know it's not a raccoon or hawk. It happened in the coop and not the run, so it wasn't pulled through the fence (plus hardware cloth is too small for this)...

What age do you introduce your chicks to flock?

Glad to hear that the friend who gifted him wasn’t simply trying to get rid of her mean roo! Thanks!

What age do you introduce your chicks to flock?

I find it interesting that the hens will be mean to the newcomers until the point of laying. Like, is this a “right of passage?” Something like, “Ah, you’re finally pulling your weight. You’re one of us now.” 😂 My old hens are barely laying at 6-8 years of age. They have no room to be talking...

What age do you introduce your chicks to flock?

He was re-homed to me and told he was friendly. He got worse with time. Lesson learned-no true need for a roo!

What age do you introduce your chicks to flock?

Hi there. I have 4 old pullets and a mean rooster. He’s not mean to the hens by any means; he does his job well. He simply hates humans. It's a small price to pay for the protection he provides my girls. I’ve been raising 8 female chicks in the same coop, with the chicks separated in a rabbit...

    Help! Chick with injured leg

...her hock joint DOES show a flat spot, leading me to lean towards a slipped Achilles, however, I truly can not feel a tendon on either side of the hock, and extending the leg in hopes of popping the tendon back in place isn't seeming to make a difference. I have successfully made "chicken...

    Help! Chick with injured leg

Hello, thanks for reading! I have a RR, born this past Easter, who once released to our flock, we realized she had either a dislocated hock or perhaps a displaced Achilles' tendon. I've been reading up on how to care for her, but truly cannot figure out where to start. In hopes that it was a...

    Hens Pecking each other

I believe we have ample space, please tell me if I'm wrong. For 8 hens, we have an 8X8X8 indoor space and our run is also 8X8X8. Both have floor to ceiling perches to maximize space. We hang cabbages for entertainment, spread scratch daily, and they also get our 2 year old daughter's scrap food...

    Hens Pecking each other

We unfortunately over the Winter lost our flock to a weasel. What a devastating time that was for us, for the hens were pets to us. We have a new flock, and an entire pen made of hardware cloth that has no opening larger than a quarter. Fingers crossed for our hens! However, these new hens...

    Hens Pecking each other

I am having the same problem! However, my flock of 6 is now down to only 5 due to their pecking. My 5 hens have ample space too, 8X8 indoors, and another 8X8 outdoors with perches, cabbage hanging, scratch daily, and my kitchen scraps daily. I put vitamin supplements in their water, they have...

Cornish X Rock needs low protein diet, any ideas?

Hello there Striderdps, We lost our battle, and Plucky passed away recently. I think we gave him a good life though, he really did seem happy, given the circumstances. He never did walk again, despite my efforts with the sling. Although I think that he liked the sling because when he was taken...

Picking neck feathers while on the nest?

Hello folks, In all, I have 6 hens. Two of which are australops, and two of which are Rhode Island Reds. They are all sweet hens, but I too notice that when my RI's are nesting, the Australops are picking out the RI's tail feathers, enough to draw blood. I too need advice. I have nesting boxes...
